I can identify with that, for sure! When I first started (just this March), I was sure I looked like a fool. I took a class at a local studio and I was very self conscious until I realized that no one was looking at me – they were all worried about themselves. I think that gave me a little freedom to try things and learn. And I was very nervous for my first private lesson – but you know what? If I was already perfect I wouldn’t need her, and she doesn’t expect me to be.

I got a pole for home practice in May and went through the "I look silly, what am I doing?" phase all over again. What I can tell you that worked for me was just practicing – with the practice comes the skill and the confidence, and the more I get of those things the more I want to practice! I am by no means advanced, but I think the more you do it the more comfortable you will be. Just keep trying!

Hey Lisa, You should see the video I just posted of myself. If I can post what I taped, you shouldn’t be scared to practice in the privacy of your own home where no one can see you. I wanted everyone to see the real me, the me that isn’t afraid to make mistakes because that’s how we learn and grow. Everyone progresses at their own pace. It will get easier and more graceful. You’ll be poling with the best of ’em in no time! Once I have the money I am going to start Veena’s lessons and I am going to take it one video at a time until I master each move. I hope to post each move as I progress throught he lessons too. Don’t worry you can’t possibly look as silly as I did! Keep at it you’re going to be great!!!

Classes are probably a good idea, because you will see everyone else (well most) is as nervous and feels as clumsy/un-sexy as you too. Plus, being told what to do, and obeying, in a class-like environment is much easier than watching a few vids and trying to make it up by yourself. You won’t have the option to give up like you do at home either, and I bet by the end of the class you will feel a LOT better! Lots of studios/gyms/clubs offer taster classes or casual classes. I fully recommend going to at least one or two to get comfortable with pole dancing.

georgiamarie and LittleC are right! I felt a little pole-tarded in my first few local studio classes. I was worried I looked silly. But just as was already voiced, no one is looking at YOU. They are concentrating on themselves and working on how well they do (or do not) do a move.

A studio class as its privileges and its drawbacks. In class you get proper instruction. But I feel like I fall behind sometimes. I may not get a move or spin the first time and I really want to hone it, but the class has already moved on. That’s when a home pole is the best. Once you get home from class, go work on that move.

In general though, I find I stay more motivated and interested when I have someone w/ me, whether its in class or my husband watching and coaching (and also participating). Maybe see if you can find a local pole pal. It makes a big difference!

I don’t like to pole ALONE in the house–just for safety reasons

But I can’t stand it when anybody is right nearby. I feel very self conscious. It was a problem all summer, since my son was home from college and his room is next door to the pole room.

I think it’s pretty natural to be a little self conscious–no matter how positively we all regard the pole sport, I guess some of the negative stereotypes have rubbed off a little bit on all of us and we have to overcome them in our own minds, too…
