Preparing for Split Grip?
Posted by bebeduckie on November 16, 2009 at 7:30 pmi’m finally comfortable with elbow grip and want to do some more advanced moves with split grip, but my arm on top just seems to slide down and can’t hold my body yet.
any suggestions on what i can do in the mean time to prep for that? i cannot take my legs off at all and can only hold ex butterfly for all of 3 seconds before my arm starts to slide and give!

If you tell me how to prepare for elbow grip I’ll tell you how to prep for split grip….show me yours and I’ll show you mine. LOL.

Do you go into crucifix before getting into the butterfly position (ie removing your hands from pole after invert)? I find it easier if i go straight into butterfly, without ever removing my top arm- you get better grip that way. Either way, i’d say keep practicing the extended butterfly & eventually that will build up the grip & strength you need. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif
I couldn’t do split grip aysha till i felt like i could hold extended butterfly forever.. then i was able to start working on ever so slightly taking my leg of the pole for just a second at a time, and now i can do it no prob! So other than maybe doing some strength training, i’d say keep at it with the extended butterfly till you get very comfortable with it! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif -

haha sissy! for me elbow grip was all about not being scared! the more you try to put your body closer to the pole, the more you will just go straight to the floor.
1. get a really good caterpillar going and when you hook your elbow pull it HARD. pull your elbow like you are trying to put your arm across your chest. don’t put your arm in a fist bc that reduces the surface area for your elbow to grip onto the pole.
2. when you are letting go of your legs, do not be afraid to bring your hips away from the pole (pull your butt away from the pole)! if you don’t you will go ka-put to the floor.now show me yours!!!

If you’re having trouble getting the hand position from crucifix or basic invert you could try a half handspring into it. That way your hands will already be in postion. That’s officially my favorite way to get into the butterfly and I’m doing it more and more to prepare me for an actual handspring. The way I first got butterfly was going straight into it from basic invert. I have a video of it, it’s my first butterfly (so it’s shaky as hell, you’ve already seen it because you commented on it LOL) but it’s an example of the hand placement I’m talking about.

I’ve been working on the split grip inverts too. I found a youtube video by Shelly (exdiva69) which explained several prepping techniques. Hope that helps. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_sunny.gif

I agree with Kobajo84, I was actually going to suggest the same vid from exdiva – I’ve been using her prep suggestions to get the split grip and I finally did my first split grip aysha last week (very shaky of course!)
the other suggestion for the split grip is to use loads of grip aid at first – it helped me get into position and understand what it felt like for my body before my hands started to slide! I did the same when I was learning my shouldermount and of course now I’m strong enough that I don’t need to use grip stuff anymore on that.
