Apprentice to Extended butterfly
Posted by MissJulie on December 15, 2009 at 4:31 amHas anyone accomplished this transition? Where you get into position where you hook your inside thigh on the pole, lean back, and get your outside leg overhead…. then with outside leg hooked transition into butterfly?
Can someone give tips? I can’t seem to get my leg high enough on the pole (it barely hooks on my ankles) and far enough above my hands… it also hurts my wrist

when you go into apprentice, make sure you are braced with your bottom arm. you should be able to hang out there all day and be really stable in your split grip. the more horizontal you can get you body, the easier it is to bring your leg in toward your face and hook the ankle. if you are leaning very upright it is really hard to get your leg in toward your face– same as with any invert, you have to lean back. then after you hook your leg, you have to twist your body and push away while dropping your head. can you go into a regular butterfly from the apprentice?

i dont know if this helps but i go into a butterfly from a cradle about 1/4 or 1/3 of the way thru this vid. it’s the same idea.

wait, i just realized– you do apprentice the opposite way that i do (i’m a righty, and i hook the left leg: http://www.triagedesign.co.uk/wikipole/index.php5?title=Image:Apprentice.jpg). it sounds like your’e talking about something like going from a flatline scorpio (http://www.triagedesign.co.uk/wikipole/index.php5?title=Image:Flatlinescorpio.jpg) into a butterfly… which would be a leg switch but still the same principle, no?

I do it from a cradle too. That’s not the same as an apprentice?

when I do it, I push with the ankle and the bottom arm at the same time while inverting, the bottom arm slides a bit down too in order to get your body in a butterfly position, that was the tricky part for me, sliding the arm, doing it from an aprentice is a little easier than from a craddle because you are not spinning. you’ll get it soon!

I think I could possibly get it with another practice session tonight if my back wasnt so damn sore….
the leaning back thing helps, perhaps I wasn’t tilted enough
Also, it’s a scary move hehe

Don’t forget to let your bottom hand slide down as you lift your leg up, this will make the move easier than trying to keep that lower hand in place. Let it slliiiide https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_sunny.gif
