This topic has probably already been discussed, but I was wondering if anyone had any advice or opinions about the best stretches and practice routines for achieving the splits.

I have been stretching for all types of splits, the left leg split, right leg split, and middle split. For the left and right leg I’ve been stretching using the "lunge" stretch (http://z.about.com/d/dance/1/0/j/2/-/-/split2.jpg) and the "reverse lunge" stretch (http://z.about.com/d/dance/1/0/k/2/-/-/split3.jpg). For the middle split I just sit on the floor and get my legs apart as far as I can (I usually do this with my pole in front of me). Then I hang on to the pole to help me roll my hips forward and stretch my legs further apart, keeping my toes pointed. That is basically all of the stretching I’m doing… I can’t quite tell if I’m making progress so I think I might start taking pictures or at least recording so I can see if there’s an improvement.

Does anyone have any further suggestions or advice about what I’m already doing or should do? I would LOVE to get a split one day… I’ve never even come close to one in my whole life! My mom would flip if she saw me do one, because she’s never done one either!

Hi there, There are a couple of great Dvds out there for helping get closer to the splits. I love, love, love, Stacy Nemour’s Secret to getting the splits and flexibility dvd. Its half an hour of sequenced stretches to open up the hips, calves ,hamstring muscles to get you faster into the splits. She has great motivational personality, so I never get board exercising with her.I have been doing her dvd since sept. I went from my front split at 17 inches measured against the wall , to 6 inches to the floor. My side splits was measured at 19 inches and I’m at 11 inches to the floor. It has made a huge difference in my flexibility as my legs are now perfectly straight when I do the spinning chopper. My legs in the chopper use to be bend and awkward looking. My only complain about her dvd is that she doesn’t hold the stretches long enough. But I and others just pause the dvd to hold the stretches longer. You can get the instant download from her site for $9.99 and just copy it to your own dvd. Another good stretching method is Bob Cooley"s Genius of flexibility. Hope that helps., https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_salut.gif Joni
