  • Problems with my wrist

    I’ve been having a few problems with my left wrist lately. It seems a bit weak and sometimes it gets a little sore when I pole. Has anyone had anything similar? I was thinking that maybe I need to strengthen it a bit. Any suggestions? I just learned to invert so I’m really excited and want to practice often but I don’t because I don’t want to hurt myself.

    Check your wrist position on spins and inverted work. Do you have a straight line from hand to shoulder, or is your wrist bent? You want a straight line–torquing the wrist can lead to soreness, tenderness, and even tendon problems.

    I would tend to agree with polergirl. Look at your grips. It sounds like you are grabbing the pole wrong during one of your tricks. Go though and examine all of your tricks one by one and find the one or more then one that is messing your wrist up. Remember, improper grip can cause not just wrist pain, but sprains/twists and worse you can break your wrist with improper grip. Be careful, and although you may hate to hear it, take a few days off the pole and let your wrist heal. Good luck figuring it out!

    My guess is that you’ve strained your wrists too much, it happens often when you get over-enthusiastic about a move https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif Just rest it for a few days and the pain will hopefully go away. If it doesn’t, try to avoid moves that twist your wrists or put extra strain on them. Last year I managed to give myself a bad case of tendonitis because I was obsessed about the reverse grab. It hurt like hell and I didn’t improve for months!
    Another reason could be that you don’t have the muscle strength for some moves yet so you’re overcompensating by death gripping the pole. Either way, take it easy if it hurts to prevent further injuries.

    Thanks for the info ladies. Not sure if my wrist probs are pole related because when it first started hurting I hadn’t been on the pole for a few days. I tried taking a week off and that still didn’t do it. I think my grips are fine, but I’ll ask my pole instructor to pay extra close attention to see if she sees anything. I hope it gets better soon!

    In the meantime I’d recommend to buy a wrist support (usually from your local pharmacy/drugstore), and also ice your wrist/hand after EVERY class- even if it doesn’t feel that sore, icing it will minimise any inflammation and swelling that can often take ages to go away. Also things like therapy elastic bands or hand grips (where you squeeze two handles together) used while going about your daily life can improve your wrist strength.

    The ladies all gave great advice! I love my Veeners! Also don’t forget to warm up, even your wrists and hands need to be ready to work. We put a lot of stress on them. It may not just be pole related….I started to have wrist pain and some elbow pain, when I would pole THEN sit on my computer typing or using the mouse for hrs.
