I can do a handstand where you kick one leg up without issue. I can also do an elbow or headstand from a deadlift (just lifting my legs up without any kick or push). Being trying to do the same with a handstand and feel like I’m close but just can’t get it.

So to those of you who can do this what is the trick to doing this. How far away should your hands be from the pole? how much of your back should be touching the pole and should there be any pressure on the back of your head when you try to raise your legs up.

    Any help would be appreciated!

I really think you need to be able to arch your back in order to get this move. I can’t do it so I am of no help.

    Hi Jeng,

The way that I worked on this that helped me was to work against a wall. I would put my hands a good bit from the wall, and then would lean my body forward as far as possible-until I was touching the wall. The further out I started, the more I could lean into it and the easier it was. As I got stronger, I could get my hands a little closer to the wall, and then the pole. I usually go a little bit off to the side – I don’t touch my head to the pole.

This might sound crazy, but I can’t have my hands normal for this (fingers pointing forward). I rotate my hands out so that my fingers are pointing backwards, or out to each side. For some reason I can press into them better that way. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif

Good luck – I hope some of that made sense and helps you!

I tried it against the wall tonight and got it over and over. I was watching a youtube video by some guy that does gymnastics and he said to make sure your hips are over your shounders before you try to lift. Once I did that I had no issues lifting my legs up slowly. yay. now I just need to practice with the pole. i think I’ll do it a bit off center from teh pole so my head doesn’t touch it at all.

Lol, I was just about to share the same tutorial. I still can’t get it (too much hamstring issues and tightness), but he explains it really well! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_thumleft.gif

Thanks! That was a video was really helpful. A few months ago I was hell bent on lifting into a handstand, but was not successful, so I filed the move under "forget about it". I guess it’s time to bring it back out.
