I have been poling for about 4 months (not counting time off) and keep getting injured. I’m getting really tired of it because the injuries are keeping me from progressing and I feel like I’m still at a beginner level after all this time. I mainly get recurring tendonitis in my wrists and forearms from poling. At first I was taking anti-inflammatories and wearing wrists braces and discontinued poling for 3 months. When I returned the same issues crept up again in the same places. I then did A.R.T. with a physical therapist and it worked very well, only I had to go every week at least once for $30 a visit (and that’s the cheapest it gets around here.) When I stopped going for the A.R.T. and starting poling again, the pain came back. I only pole for maybe an hour one day a week and get somewhat painful tendonitis.

I’m thinking that this is because I have a death grip, but I’m really not sure. I definitely do have one because I don’t spin very well at times (I think I hold on too tight.) Then I’m thinking it might be my strength, but I’m not sure – my arms are kinda scrawny and this is the first real arm workout I’ve done ever. I was taking classes at a pole studio before I got a pole at home and none of the other girls there had this issue even as beginners. It’s getting pretty frustrating and painful.

The A.R.T. is the best thing I’ve run into for this problem, but I’m not interesting in spending an extra $120 – $150 a month on my poling habit. I may have to though.

Does anyone know anything about this? Am I just not meant to pole dance?

It would probably be really helpful if you could post a video of yourself practicing some of the moves you typically use. It’s entirely possible that it might be something as simple as correcting your grip, but it’s hard to tell without seeing what you’re doing.

I’m so sorry to hear that. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cry.gif Sounds like possibly both an issue of poor technique and lack of strength. I have long thin limbs…I’m not hardy in that department, lol…. but its possible to have injury free training. Now of course accidents happen but that’s not what I’m talking about. One other very important thing!….. Make sure your stretching and massaging your hands and forearms properly after EVERY pole dance session!! It didn’t sound like you were taking the lessons here, but just in case…here are some that could be helpful.

I think it’s definitely the death grip and maybe you’re pushing yourself too hard on some spins/moves? I had serious tendonitis for like half a year because I was obsessed about the reverse grab and just did it over and over again. Generally it’s the moves that twist your arm and wrist that cause pain and tendonitis, so I’d avoid those for a while.

Try to loosen up your grip a bit as well, death gripping strains your arms a lot. Just keep poling and don’t push it if it hurts, you’ll gain the muscle strength to do tricks without hurting your arms. Just be patient https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif
