Choreography
Posted by earthpanther on June 19, 2010 at 4:21 pmHey Ladies,
Looking for some advice on choreography. I can do plenty of great tricks on the pole, but definitely lack rhythm to put things together into a choreographed routine. I welcome any suggestions on how to learn choreography. Thanks!!!!Mary Adrenaline replied 14 years, 5 months ago 6 Members · 5 Replies -

A few tips:
-Start with music you really like. Listen to lots of different songs, there will be one on which you”ll start to move automatically (even if it’s only your toes) …that’s your song.
-Listen, listen, listen to that song. I always use the songtekst to so see the different parts and write down things like "quiet instrumental part" and "heavy drums" etc.
-Usually, I know what I can do on the most obvious points in the song…like a surprising drop or floorwork. You can also try to express some emotions in te songtext. Start with these points…it is like the first pieces of the puzzle.
-Play around and try things. Take your favorite move and try to do other moves in combination with that move. Watching youtube movies helps a lot here…
-Use these combinations to fill the "empty spots" of your puzzle. Don’t put the heavy stuff on the end but don;t start with your best move either. Don’t do all the same type of moves (like handsprings, or spins) in one sequence, that will look boring.
-Practice! And watch yourself on vids, you’ll see what you need to change…But really…finding music that suits you is the most important part. And remember that you can only learn this by doiing…good luck!

yes although I only freestyle, I would like to start working on a routine, and agree the best thing is to listen to the song that natrually moves you til you get familiar w where there are accent pieces ( like in my may challenge vid I used Crazy Bitch as my song and the beginning is very explosive to start the song so i did a open leg RG and really through myself bc that was an accent piece. ). so listen and if the song starts soft than suddenly changes to a faster tempo or there is that something that stands out you want an unexpected dramatic move. it doesn’t have to be a big trick but it does need big attitude to fit the vibe of the song. can be a fast drop or a quick hair flip. so once you sit down w your pad and pen and listen to your song for the accents you know where your going to thrown the drama in.. now what to do w rest of song? listen for lulls in the beat or vocals where you can catch your breath and do some standing poses, hip rolls, floor work, wall work ect. mark down the moves you wil use for these lulls. can be as simple as writting "wall work and crawl to pole for next move". now think of a start to the lead up to the first accent or other planned move. will you walk directly to the pole? will you crawl to it? ignore it at first and go right to the floor/wall other move? ok next how do you want to end it? on the floor? sitting on the pole? in an invert? listen to the song and now the impression you want to leave.
now you should have listened to the song enough to be familiar w the tempo, beat, and lyrics. you should have written an entrance sequence ( walk to pole, wrap leg around, bend down and whip hair up.. or walk to wall, do body waves off it, slither to floor, flirty legs, roll over, get up sexy, walk to pole, first spin ect)
you should have a move planned for every dramatic part of the song ( accent pieces ), you should know how your going to handle slower parts ( lulls ) and know how you want to end the song (ending sequence) -
I first wait for a song to hit me. I have a big list of songs I like to pole to but some come out and hit me better than others. Ill listen to it and get an idea of what I want to dance. I also listen for pitch changes, bridge, chorus etc. Ill think of a few wow moments and then start filling.
Example: I really want to do Dropping Plates by Disturbed. Theres one point where the music slows down into the bridge. I could see myself slowing down my moves, doing a chair spin things to still keep me going. Once I know its close to my wow moment I start getting ready. Right where he sings "plates on your a#$ b*^%h, plates on your a$@", I want to do a handspring mount w/the heels clapping and maybe an aysha.
Once I know what im working with, Ill listen to the song non stop. Ill tell ya sometimes moves come to me mid day. Then I actually play w/everything, thats when I know if I need more moves, spins, tricks etc.
