Poling gives your body a beating! So what do you do to help prevent injury or to maintain a healthy body? Do you do a longer warmup? Cooldown? Target strength training? Stretch more? Monthly massages?

I make sure I stretch before and after a workout. As far as bruising, its inevitable and just going to happen. With frequent moves my skin and pole contact areas have gotten used to it and I find myself bruising less often. I also make sure I wear footware now, to avoid kicking walls or ceilings that otherwise have caused injury to my feet.

I gave up on trying to stop bruising, lol. I wear them proudly now. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

As for preventing injury, I find that showing up about 10-15 minutes before class and warming up on my own really helped. I also try to stretch out more when I get back home. I tend to push myself really hard and tend to practice the same moves over and over if I feel like they aren’t up to par, which often leaves me with a tad of tendonitis in my wrists and sore muscles. If I’m in a lot of pain, I ice it for awhile and convince my lovely husband to help me rub that muscle down.

    I always warm up
If I have taken time off of poling, I start with strength training first, for a week. Working full body but focusing on shoulders and wrists (doing all the exercises I have in the strength lessons)
    I always focus on keeping a neutral scapula. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_thumleft.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_thumleft.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_thumleft.gif
Stretch after to maintain….. but have been doing flexibility work daily. To work on increasing flexibility.

If I have an injury…Rest, ice, ASAP
See a dr if you feel you need to, they can help you determine if its muscle, tendon, bone, sprain ect….
Normally with pole its muscle stains for this I
Rest, ice as soon as I know I have hurt myself.
The next day…Massage, heat. To prevent scar tissue.
Once you begin to use the injured area, ice after use to reduce swelling. Continue with heat and massage for as long as needed. Over icing always seems to prevent my injury to heal quickly so I only ice after exercising or heavily using the injured muscle or tension. Massage heat and gentle stretching when warm has been my friend. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif

I don’t treat my bruises because they don’t bother me much. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_viking.gif
