for the names: everyone uses different names at different places. At my studio a yogini is a basket. The only way for me to remember them is to just do them over and over. I know when my instructor calls out moves, I tend to forget them until she shows them.

Splits: I am like you. I can do a split on the ground w/no problem. im now lifting my back leg up. One day I want to rub my heel through my hair a la Alethea style. I say work on your hip flexors more, how much do you stretch them before you do a pole spilt. I can get my leg up there but its not pretty ….yet. I would stretch them out first and see how that feels.

If you’re having problems doing the splits aerially it may be a strength rather than flexibility issue – you’re confident that you’re flexible enough.

Doing active stretching – lifting and holding your legs in front and behind should help.

Perhaps it’s because when you are on the floor, your body is at a 90 degree angle to your legs but when you are standing up, you’re trying to bring your leg up right next to your body. How easily can you lean over and touch your chest to your knee when sitting down?

When you next try doing the splits up the pole, hold on and lean back a bit, then try and put your leg up

I can’t actually do the splits properly myself (yet!), but I have been able to put my leg up the pole as if I were doing the splits, )except my bottom leg is bent) and found that leaning back more made it possible

Hope this helps and makes some sense!

I use wikipole too, although the website itself isn’t great which can make it hard to find moves your looking for quickly. I went to this website: http://www.verticaldance.com/poledancingvideoandphotogallery.htm and downloaded and printing out their moves catalogue so I can refer to it when I’m practicing without having to search through the internet https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif

Wikipole just added a picture gallery so you can browse by image and see the name if that helps. the VD gallery was my first list of moves too and it’s pretty thorough.
