Good question. I don’t have the answer, but I’m kind of larger and have been pondering the same thing. I always wonder if it would be easier to fling myself around the pole and support my body weight better if I were lighter. I guess I’ll just have to drop a few and see.

I’m glad that your asking someone to check their skills against their own previous body. It’s probably not relevant to compare yourself to the skinny girl in pole class and assume you would have the abilities of THAT girl https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_queen.gif if only you were her size.

One cool thing I’ve learned is that improving flexibility is not so dependent on your current weight. I’ve kind of been at a weight loss plateau, but have still be able to achieve full splits (both sides!) for the first time in my life this year. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_thumright.gif

Ill tell you this. I used to think like that ALOT. If only I was skinnier, I could do these things. But then I see curvy gals doing amazing tricks and it gives me the confidence that one day it will happen.

Losing weight should improve your power-to-weight ratio, so theoretically it should help. Of course, you will probably also be getting stronger while you lose weight, so it is kind of hard to pinpoint it to just weight loss.

One thing I have definitely seen is that I have had to go back and relearn some tricks (especially thigh holds) as my shape has changed.

I don’t think you can say someone is better b/c of their size, but I do believe it is easier for smaller women to get good. It simply doesn’t take as much strength for them. Also, short women have it easier, especially in some moves like flag where you are holding your body out from the pole.

There are amazing pole dancers in all shapes and sizes! Most of all, be yourself. Learn your style and what tricks suit your body. You have a unique body, and you move in a unique way. That holds true over a pretty big weight variation.

    Good luck!

I think I might be better on the pole a few pounds lighter, however I believe believe what will truly help me get better isn’t my size, but my strength and flexibility. It all gets down to strength me thinks, not necessarily weight.
