pole sit
Posted by Queenie426 on October 12, 2010 at 7:28 pmI for the life of me cannot do a basic pole sit! I cannot cross my leg enough to get it far enough back on my other leg and the pole kills my inner thighs! When I try to let go I feel like my skin is going to rip off! I have all the leg strength in the world. What am I doing wrong?

Can you post a vid of you trying? It could be multiple things =) Maybe try practicing a crucifix first and get your thighs toughened up.

Yes a vid would be helpful. You’re probably not squatting enough in order to cross your legs as much as you need to. I teach my students do this from the floor, without lifting up into the sit.. this way, you can learn to squat more. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif
Standing with the pole in front of you, squat down as if you’re sitting in chair (holding the pole with both hands), and plant one foot right in front of the pole while staying squatted. Then bring the other leg around to cross the planted one. You don’t have to lift your foot off the floor right off the bat! Just give yourself time to adjust to the feeling of this position first! Engaging your abs (& arms) can really help to take the pressure off your thighs. Just sit like this & gradually try to rely on your feet less & less, while engaging your other muscles to hold you there.. Eventually the pain in your thighs will subside! Let us know how you do! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif -
I didn’t ever think that I could sit either. Yes, it hurts at first and for awhile. Persistence is the key to this move. I just kept at it, even if you can only hold it for a second at first. Finally, I just did it one day. Good luck and be tough! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

I had problems with it too, but I just kept at and eventually got it. Oh, and the pain does eventually subside!

Keep trying! pole sit was my nemisis too for about a full week! It was driving me insane! But I just kept at it and then BAM! I finally was able to stick it and hold it. Easy no, painful yes. Even now a week later, I still try and do it a few times every practice session and it gets a little easier each time and I can hold it for a lil longer each time as well which is exciting. Hang in there!
