I just read an article about Tinnitus in a major magazine–cannot remember which one– (New Yorker?). Anyway, there is a lot of new research suggesting that it has a powerful neurological component. Possibly, neurons in the part of the brain wired to process sound become "locked in" and continue to "fire" after the sound stimulus itself has gone away. One of the scientists interviewed has had some success in using specially prepared sequences of tones designed to suppress the sounds. I wonder if these are available as downloadable files to an I-pod or MP3 player. He plays these tones to experimental subjects and some percentage of them get relief from the symptoms without medication. The beeps and musical notes are designed to "quiet down" the neurons by overstimulating them–in much the same way that Ritalin, a stimulant, "calms" down the cortex in hyperactive children.
I get minor low frequency rumbling around allergy season. I’ve always assumed it’s congestive in nature (not Tinnitus) because Sudafed–or even a triple shot of Espresso from Starbucks–will make it go away. Problem is–try sleeping a full night with the amount of decongestant you have to take to stop the rumbling sound, LOL! Fortunately, it seems to hang around only for ragweed season (Sept) and new grass (May)–so it’s just a few weeks of the "hum" and it’s gone. Red wine and any kind of pilsnerish Beer (like Sam Adams) does it, too. Somebody told me that Sulfites or residues in the fermenting process can make you allergic and stuff up the ear canal.
If I remember the citation, I will post the name and date of the magazine…

I totally know what your talking about foxy!! I have that problem too, didn’t know there was a name though. Mine seems to be related to my sinuses, so allergies and getting over a cold causes it for me. Yes it is annoying at night!! But it doesn’t seem to affect my hearing. Maybe you could try playing some kind of relaxing sound CD? https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_salut.gif

Wow didnt know there was a name on this condition. I thought tinnitus was something totally different. Have you tried Chinese Ear Candles?? I was having problems with me ears recently and I bought the Ear Candles and my ears are great now!!! I was hearing buzzing and what Derm called ‘imaginary’ sounds and the ear candles cleared it right up. Its amazing how they work, I was baffled! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

I’ve done ear candling and it’s pretty cool…..but I’ve also heard ALOT of criticism about it, supposedly it can really be dangerous for your ear canal. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_sad.gif I’d definitly consult a holistic doctor about it if you’re interested, though I’ve bought them over the counter at GNC before. haha, I also almost set my husband’s hair on fire……all kinds of danger! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif
Seriously, though Jacq I’m so sorry to hear of your condition – that would make me go absolutely insane!! Health is so precious, and so easy to take for granted.
