One handed/armpit hold spins
Posted by Sabrina27 on October 29, 2010 at 10:24 amI’ve seen some beautiful one handed spins by Honeyrider which she does effortlessly. I notice in her vids the pole is sitting in what looks like an armpit hold?? I’ve tried this and it kills and find myself falling out of the move pretty much instantly! Is this something that will come with time and practice? Is there anything I can do to help make it less painful in that area?!

hm, i’m not sure which videos you mean but armpit holds are less painful on spin then they are on static. but– for some people– the pain is a lot worse than others. practice, and doing it over and over, helps! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif

She does these spins quite often in her videos and is in her current one. Best way I can describe it is the hold is similar to if you were going into the teddy move.

I used to find the armpit hold extremely painful. One thing I would do to help, is try to condition my underarm area a bit. I would stand next to my pole and cross my arm around it, then slide down to the floor, holding the pole tightly in my underarm area. After a couple days of doing this, I was able to hold my teddy a lot longer.

One thing to remember when watching her vids…..the holds are done on spin mode. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif so so pretty!!

Its not easier just different….its a hold on spin mode. On static its give you more pole burn and takes a different approach requiring a bit more strength to hold your self up while creating the momentum to spin your body. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif

on spin, i think it’s easier to get your hips out in front of the pole (since the spin of the pole pulls your body out and away) so that you have your side against the pole to grip as well. also… centrifugal motion helps to keep your body weight out instead of down when you are spinning.

Hey Sabrina!I totally agree with V,Amy and Jenn! It just takes some conditioning of the underarm just like with the legs.Remeber when you did your first pole sit and the unbearable pain!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_surprised.gif And now painless, right? Just keep working at it.I have to say when I first started doing them i had the worst bruises ever!!But it well get easier!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

Sally Anne Giles taught us this move, on static, in her workshop at the Pole Convention. She does this move beautifully.
Yes, it’s extremely painful but getting use to it and desensitizing your armpit hold will just take time but will work if you keep practicing. It’s important to swing the hips around the front of the pole so more lower back flexibiilty helps, start with two hands and release the outside hand. Also your inside arm needs to drop down low.

I found that the hood ornament really helped condition the under arm for holds. Because you are using your underarm to grip onto pole but also you are pushing the pole into your side and you have top of the foot against the pole and the inside of you knee too, so theres lots of contact points to ease the presssure on the under arm. I can now lift into teddy from hood ornament. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cat.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cat.gif
