Moves for Gymnasts
Posted by Sanchara on January 16, 2011 at 3:50 amHi I'm a gymnast and Equestrian Vaulter (gymnastics on horseback) so I'm already fairly strong and flexible in some ways… Can anyone suggest skills I might already be strong enough to do from my existing training?
thanks in advance.

I would still start from the beginning learning all the basic transitions, spins, and proper ways of inverting. Already having strength, flexibility, and an understanding of balance and momentum will help you immensely, but like anything else start with the foundation. Most gymnasts learn the basics quickly. Plus these moves often are the foundation of other ones like a back hook can transition to an open V, invert, figure head, shoulder mount. ( you may not know what all of those things are but you will eventually)
Getting Veena's lessons would be your best bet because they will allow you to work at your own pace and has plenty of choices.

+1 to what PhillyPoleJess said. I am a former gymnast and I would say it's best to just start from the beginning and learn it all. You'll progress quickly, but it's important to have a good foundation. It's a different type of movement than gymnastics.

Here another former gymnast. And I agree…you should never forget the basics. You will learn very fast, but doiing the basics first will help you and make you understand the more difficult moves.

thanks anyway then. You all make very good points. I will start from the beggining. 😀

You'll probably catch on fairly quickly thanks to your background but pole does require a different kind of strength, so yes, start at the very beginning and build up! 🙂

Former gymnast here… I can tell you that even in gymnastics I did not have the GUNS I have now!! My shoulders/biceps are downright manly from pole. But also I did catch on MUCH quicker than a lot of girls do with pole. I think I did a flying body spin on my 2nd lesson. That doesn't mean it was a perfect one though. Inverting will come easier for you but of course start from the beginning. Also I've found the same things you did in gymnastics will happen in pole… for example in gymnastics I was always powerful but didn't always realize my knee was bent or my arm was flailing in a move.. until you video yourself poling and realize oh, I should straighten my knee more or wtf is my arm doing in that move!

Thanks PowerTwirl. I will probably start videoing my training. I wish i had the time to take classes…but saterday is the only day that I don't already have 5-6 hours of traning scheduled. It's supposed to be my rest day but I still do some ballet barre, swimming and pole.

Forgot to ask you….Who is your vaulting coach??
I know a few of them…or of a few of them from when my daughter vaulted.
She was with Susan at Skyline for a bit….
I know Sady from the gymnastics/trampoline world…..

I’m coached by Colin Schmidt for Vaulting and I don’t know that many people in the gymnastics world yet. I’ve only been doing it for like three months. I train at Twisters and my coach there’s name is Johnathan. Both are absolutely excelelnt coaches. Very knowlagable about their respective sports and very very technical wich is something I need. I also lucked out because I dont learn well from females as all lol.

Fellow ex gymnast here too! You will probably catch on fast, but I agree, start with the basics! Unfortunatly when I started pole there want much out there so I learned all kinds or horrible technique and way too advanced moves before basics and hurt myself a few times, but this site has been my savior! You’ll be great! Plus when you start choreographing you can always stick in gymnastics moves likefront/back walkovers, handstands and cartwheels lol! 🙂 I’ve had dreams about managing a giant on the pole but its probably not going to happen!

a giant on the pole? hmmm not sure how that would work. but then again I can't even do one on bars lol
