I feel as though I'm ready to start the shoulder mount, and I've tried with several different holds (one where the arm wraps around and up the pole, another where both are bent and cupped, as well as others people have shown me).  The one where my mounted side's arm is wrapped in front around the pole seems to feel the best, but I'm not sure where to go next.  I feel like I got that "sweet spot" on my shoulder, and I've tried kicking up for a good month or two now off an on.  Does anyone have another tip for getting farther?  My legs are only going as high as my head, and I can't seem to get them to go farther.  Thank you!

My prep for shoulder mount included a zillion SM pullups (dead lifting legs as far up as they'd go, repeat repeat repeat repeat) and doing an SM from a kneeling position so I knew I had the core strength to get up without having to kick up. Are you able to stand or kneel at the pole and bring your knees to your chest without kicking at all? If so, you're right–you're probably ready. If not, I'd continue building strength, and one day it will surprise you and just happen!

For me, the double cupped grip is the most secure and versatile, but I have seen SMs with every grip you could imagine and they're beautifully done, so like you said, it's about finding the one that feels good to you.

Thank you so much! I'll work on it for the next week and post my progress afterwards.  I just never had a way to do exercises strictly for this, so the dead lift and the knees to chest should help a lot.

Are you taking the lessons here? If so I would take a look at the shoulder mount lesson,https://www.studioveena.com/lessons/view/b9b368b0-b880-11df-856f-001b214581be I show you exactly how to fine the right position placement of the shoulder. Also I teach this move from the ground first. I don't recommend trying this from standing until you understand the mechanics of it from the floor. There are many tips for a good shoulder mount but making sure the pole is placed near the neck on the Trapezius is important. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_heart1.gif

I wanted to say thank you to both polegirl and studio veena!  I'm progressively getting better at the move with both of your tips, and have been able to go into an invert successfully with the basic hold w/ both my hands cupping the pole instead of the hold I was working with before.  Thank you very much!

Hooray!  I think the shoulder mount is a great move. It's impressive and quite lovely.
