  • Which arm/hand to use?

    So I know this might sound like a stupid question…but I'm a newbie so please bear with me >_<

    If I am a righty, which arm is supposed to be the one on top or the one on bottom if I am trying to pole-sit or pole pull, etc.

    I was trying the pole sit and for some reason my left arm is really sore. I feel like all the tension and pulling is coming from the left arm. Is this normal? Am I doing something wrong? Thanks in advance ladies!!

    P.S.

    I know that I'm just supposed to do it but I psych myself out and get very technical with moves and think about them and then I can't do them because I'm busy over analyzing it and thinking about it. Any kind of advice with the arms would be great!

    I think in the end it's best if you can do most things with both hands. Of course you will always have a stronger side, but just try learning moves both ways. Then you'll notice which side learns slower than the other ..

    It's better for your body if both sides get the same workout 🙂

    Normally, I find that I start off on my dominant hand on top (which is also my right hand), and then practice with my left, in order to achieve balance.

    I've noticed that I overanalyze when I use my right hand, and the left side just seems to get it. I think I'm weird! 

    And I totally understand really analyzing moves, and possibly psyching yourself out…best way for me to stop is to try something else…something easier, or maybe a move I already know. Do a little freestyle dancing, relax, get back into what your body is doing, rather than what your head is doing!

    I always learn stuff on both sides, but I find when not inverted one side is stronger and when inverted the other side is, but it is not a huge difference to tell the truth.  Most people find that if they are right handed their right hand is stronger, but this is not a hard and fast rule.

    Thanks ladies! I do practice both arms but I only feel the strain in my left arm…is this normal?

    I get that too, Nancypants! I do a split grip on my left hand from facing the pole, and it kinda hurt for a bit…I've had to pay attention and make very sure that I had everything in the right position. Even then, if your right is your dominant hand, I think it would naturally start out stronger than your left, so…give it time!

    When I climb my left hand always ends up on top.  On baseball grip inverts, whichever armpit the pole is in is the hand on the bottom.
