Hello! My name's Sherry, and I'm 26, from the Inland Empire in Southern California.

I first discovered pole dancing for fitness when I was browsing a website for this gym in Bangkok. I was like, "What?? A pole dancing class? Crazy!" This was like a year and a half ago.

A couple months ago, my boyfriend showed me this YouTube video of a pole dancer on Thailand's Got Talent. After that, all I was watching on YouTube was pole dancing! The first video that keeps coming up on the search for "pole dance" was TaraKarina's video. Every single video she has, she recommends this website, and that's how I found this amazing community!

I decided to take a few weekly classes at this studio near me, and I've taken three so far. I was convinced to start pole dancing because it looks so fun, and looks like it could help me build strength.

I just got my pole this week, and so excited to get better!

The biggest problem I have other than my weak body is…

    My parents. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_sad.gif

After I received the pole, I took the pieces and hid them all in a closet they rarely open. Then I tried bringing up the idea to them a few times – shot down everytime. It's because pole dancing originated from strip clubs and stuff. "Why can't you just choose a different way to exercise? There are so many other ways! …Fine, get a pole, but you're not putting it in THIS HOUSE."

Well, this is something I really want to do! I bought the pole with my own money. Thanks to the help and support of my boyfriend, this new chrome X-Pole is now set up in this room behind me. I enjoy every moment with it, even with the little than I can do.

The only reason the pole is up right now is because they're gone on a two-week trip overseas. In only a matter of days, they'll be back home again. I have to take it back down and hide it again. Looks like the only way is to quickly set it up, and take it down while they're out of the house for work.

I would move out if I could, but I don't yet make enough for living life on my own.

Oh well. This is life for me. Too bad there is no way I can convince them that pole dancing is very beneficial and fun and NOT stripping.

I am so happy to be a part StudioVeena.com. You all are very supportive of each other! Thank you for having me here!

Hey Sherry~~ I'm a newbie to pole dance too…welcome to the club!!

Oh gosh..you got your Xpole chrome!! That's exactly what I wanted for my birthday! My only problem..I have limited space in installing the pole (I'm renting…a tiny living room and a small guest room with a freaking ceiling fan in the midde!!) BUT…I'll find a way…lol  Even if I'm just setting up my pole to practice my climb!!

About your issue…is there anyway you can set up your pole at your bf's place?

Whenever I tell my friends that I'm doing pole fitness, they all say "why can't you pick a normal excerise like gymnastic??" or worse from co-workers "you plan on a change of career?? there's a club down the street" ARGH…In my mind, they are just jealous that I can get on a pole and they can't =P

Anyway…good luck and keep us posted!!  ^_^

I've been in a similar situation. I was living with my parent up until about 6 months ago. When I was 23 I started pole dancing classes and fell in love. I kept pestering my mom to let me buy a pole and put it up in the garage once we cleaned it pout, but I kept getting shot down with the reason that the garage would be her "art studio." I had to bite the bullet until I moved out and now I have my pole in my dining room. 😀

Hey Mechie! My parents were saying the same things! "What? Are you gonna quit nursing school now and become a stripper?" I wish I could set up my pole in my boyfriend's place, but he lives 40 miles away, and because my parents forbid me to see him, they check my mileage so I can't drive to his place. =(  Anyway, I do hope you find a way to put up your pole!

Hi sensualscimitar! Congratulations on moving out! I will have a place to myself hopefully sometime soon!  Lucky you!

Thank you for the warm welcomes, ladies!

Man you definately need your own place. You're an adult, you can make your own decisions. Checking your milage is insane.

Not to be like.. I dunno, I guess flying off the handle or.. something, but I do agree with sensualscimitar.. you're 26. You're love life is none of their business :/ While I can see the point of, their house, their rules (speaking of your pole) but maybe if you showed them some of these videos by Tara Karina, 0blivious (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ini-qLYsLYA) which is a very artsy pole video. My mom showed her obvious worry of me becoming a stripper, to which I assured her.. no.

I'm sorry if I got too personal or anything, I really try not to 🙁 I do welcome you to SV though, and the world of poling :] Good luck!<3

My mom was a little weirded out at first as well. I showed her some videos of Felix Cane and she started seeing things my way. 😀

I wish my parents would treat me like an adult too. But yeah… I'll just bear with this until I get a job in the nursing field.

Until then, I will see if I can try to show them some really artsy pole dancing videos like TaraKarina, 0blivious or even better – Veena!  Maybe then my mom could see how we can strengthen and stretch our bodies while having a good time while not doing a super provocative kind of dance.

But… my parents are already having a hard time dealing with my brother's gender transition, and of course they'd be very upset with my decision to start poling. =\

    Thanks again for the welcomes!

Hey welcome! 🙂  I'm new to the pole too.  I saw you're getting an X-pole (jealous!!)… Those things are pretty portable so maybe you could put it up and take it down in a snap?  Like when they're gone for more than a couple hours or something. It does sound like a pain in the ass though.

My parents would FREAK if they found out I was pole dancing.  Luckily I live two hours away to go to school (nursing student also https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif) so when I get my pole, I'll have time to stash it.  Unfortunately, so many people think pole dancing is trashy and not just parents.. so it will be a while before it's not taboo. 🙁  No one knows I pole dance, not even my friends!

Good luck, parents can be tough! xoxo

Hey, xcandycoatedx! That's really cool to see another nursing student into pole too! You're pretty good at hiding it it seems. I always have this urge to tell people about it. I want SO much to show my parents how much I love it, but maybe I'll just wait until I get really good first. 🙂

    Good luck to you!

Hey Sherry.. yes it is tough being under someone elses roof and wanting to "do your own thing" just respect their wishes to the best of your ability, do what you need to to get out and be successful on your own sweetie. Sometimes it takes time… (or roomates) but believe you-me you can't put price on peace of mind…lol!  In regard to telling others.; what they think matters not… I am a 29 year old mother of 1, 6 year Navy veteran, CA licensed cosmetologist, Bachelor degree in management toting WOMAN who currently is a department head for IT administration for the Navy… and I POLE DANCE. I have no shame and I don't defend my choice to do it either. Why? Because I'm grown and I made the choice to do ALL of those things… If they don't like it too bad. As you get older trust me your wanting to care about what "they" (whoever they are) think will diminish ESPECIALLY when you start paying your own bills. Either way keep your head, practice when you can, and stay positive. You'll get there soon enough.

You impress me so much, Nikkay! You have so many positions! Thank you so much for the motivational post! All this support I'm gettting here really means a lot to me. So glad I found this place, and I'm glad I took a really big step in starting pole dance.
