  • How To Look Good While Breathing Hard?

I laughed reading my own question. . .

How do you look good when you are breathing hard? By the end of my practicies I'm breathing hard, and I DON'T look sexy while doing so. My mouth is either hanging open, or I look like I'm about to explode from breathing through my nose.

Any tips? The pros always look great performing (never out of breath!) and so do many of the you on here, even by the end of your videos! What is your breathing secret?

A lot of it may have to do with stamina. I've tried deep breathing through my nose, but it gets to a point where it's not enough. The only possible solution I can think of is smiling (and breathing through mouth), but a perpetual smile looks weird.

Suggestions? Feel free to LOL with me

I've kind of wondered this myself. lol I have exercise-induced asthma, so even though I work out a ton and am in very good condition, anything intensive like poling gets me panting pretty quickly. I also am very bad about holding my breath sometimes–don't know why I do that, but I actually do it quite a bit when I pole, I've noticed. You might want to pay close attention next time you're practicing to make sure you aren't doing the same thing; obviously improper breathing techniques during your workout are going to make you suck wind all the harder. Other than that, I don't really have any advice, just some I'm-in-the-same-boat sympathy for you. My only other suggestion might be if you're dancing for your SO, just whip off your top really quickly. They won't even notice if you're out of breath. lol I jokingly told my boyfriend one time before I danced for him that it didn't matter if I screwed up and fell in front of him, because as soon as he started to laugh at me, I'd just whip the girls out and then he wouldn't even remember that the performance hadn't gone perfectly. He agreed.

Practice, practice, practice.  Not only do I pole but I also take some intensive cardio classes.  As much as I hate cardio it has really helped with the stamina and heavy breathing.

Thank you guys. Hmmm I do have a habit of holding my breath when concentrating (esp for newer moves), but I’ve been working on breaking that. Ill just have to keep practicing.

Haha, and if all else fails, I’ll remember to whip out my girls!

Good question!! If I feel like im running out of breath I usually try to do some simpler moves or floorwork while taking deep breaths. Ive lost a lot of stamina from lack of practice lately!

Thanks for this, I am sucking air after a semi-decent continous practice or routine.  I also tend to hold my breathe and am working on it.  I wish I had more time to do good cardio and other workouts to compliment poling, but just don't have the time.  I usually practice by myself, wonder if bringing out the girls will distract me hahahaha

lol, great advice!  yep, it's stamina.  i hate cardio, too.  but pole can be cardio, right??  practice, practice – can't wait until i can just DANCE and not have it feel like a workout 🙂

Oh dear Hooked, mind you don't fall over whilst distracting yourself… https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

I'm worryingly out of breath after just a pole hold or crucifix.  Turns out I have zero CV fitness.  I guess I need to set aside sessions to dance and *not* climb up and down the pole (but that's the fun bit! lol), so I can actually keep exercising long enough to make a difference.

@Polenerd: perhaps, unsexy as it might be, but strictly for practice sessions, those nasal strips that help you breathe through your nose might be an idea?

Other than smiling, I guess you could get away with the occasional deep breath through your mouth whilst pulling some kind of sexy "ooh!" pose, Burlesque style.  Erm, I have no idea how to explain that better.  You know the kind of thing where you'd at the same time tilt your head and run a hand up the back of your neck and into your hair.  This may be a silly suggestion https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

When I am dancing I find that if I get out of breath it is always helpful to do something other than the pole like floor work or dancing along the wall. This gives you time to catch your breath and move around a little bit so you are still doing a little cardio. When I teach I tell the women the same thing. I usually walk up to a wall and bend at the waist to stretch my legs a little. It looks sexy if you do it right, i.e. touch the bottom of you leg by your ankle and glide your hand up to your thigh while standing up, it helps open your lungs up to get a full breath, if you inhale while doing it.
