  • Major leg flexibility imbalance.. will my hips go out of alignment?

    Hi ladies,

Can someone who has body mechanics knowledge help me with this please:

My right leg has more hyper extension AND more of a knock-knee than my left leg. It's also Much more flexible than the left leg. As in, I can do a dance split on the right for routines, but on the left side I'm about 8-10 inches away from the ground. I stretch both sides equally, but my left hamstring is still very tight and just doesn't seem to respond much.

So with my right leg being so much more flexible, am I at risk of my hips going out of alignment if I continue working both sides equally? Should I spend much more time stretching the left side, or will I actually be putting myself out of alignment if I spend more time on the left? I don't want to end up walking crooked or something by the time I'm an old lady!

    Thanks a lot!

My left leg is more flexible than my right so I know what you are saying. I think if you spend a little more time on you "tight" leg it should start to loosen up a little more. When you stretch just pay more attention to your left leg and you should get there in no time. I wouldn't worry about throwing your body off in any way. If your left leg go there then your right should be able to do the same. You might just have a tighter hip flexor and that just needs a little more special attention. Do any stretches that you can feel in your hip itself and that should work. Our bodies don't always do what we want them to so sometimes it just takes a bigger push. Don't stop stretching your left leg just spend some extra time on your right. Hope I helped!!  https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

I have the same problem, left leg is more flexible than right, I think it’s due to the fact that I practice certain moves solely on one side of pole instead of the other, now im focusing on practicing on the side that I’m not used to. But I don’t think your hips would go out of balance anyways.

    Thanks for the replies! 🙂
@Ivygirl726: Its my left hamstring thats really tight, both hip flexors are very flexible. I’ll keep working on it, thx!

@Curious: good point, the routines I’m taught all tend to split of the right so far!

I suspect the imbalance has something to do with how hyper extended my right leg is. When I touch my toes, my right knee bends further back than the left. Maybe if I stretch the left leg enough, one day the hyper extension on both sides might actually match. LoL!
