So, I haven't had the great successes that a lot of people here have had. I do the strength training, I work hard, and I just don't seem to see improvement. I couldn't even get off the ground. I had the lessons here, and I worked on the dance moves that you don't need the pole hold for, and I practiced, and I eventually cancelled the lessons because I wasn't going anywhere.

I went back to other things as my main forms of dance and exercise, and would every now and then do a pole walk or something like that. And when the hubby makes me super mad, I actually can do a pole hold lol, I just seem to get that super strength when I'm angry.

Yesterday, out of nowhere, I decided to try to climb the pole, no thoughts to proper form or anything like that, more the mentality of a kid climbing a clothes line pole (thats what I used to do when I was a kid. I thought for sure this would come to me naturally…) Anyways, I just used my legs mostly to hold, and just kind of scootched up. I slid down, and thought about proper form. The whole putting the front of your ankle on the pole to climb didn't seem as natural or make as much sense as wrapping my heel/ankle around the other side and clamping the pole to my left leg to the inside of my shin. I tried it anyway, and as I have many times in the past, pinched my ankle skin, and got a pole burn.

"WTF is up with this move?!?!?!?!" I screamed, "It doesn't make ANY sense to do it this way, and I can't hold the weight in my arms!!!"

Well, I was irritated, but encouraged because I managed the scootch method just minutes earlier. I lined up my arms, put my shin on the bar and relaxed my foot, rather than flexing it to create a hold point. I pulled myself up! I was amazed. I decided to try another hand, I wrapped it around, and pulled myself up again! I made it to the top of the pole!!! I had had DREAMS about accomplishing this, thinking about it, wishing for it, trying so hard. I haven't been able to do anything like it, with the same sense of strength, in so long. I even took my left leg off the bar and pointed it behind me, I don't know if thats an official move or anything, it just looked pretty, and I kind of curled it behind me into a semi-graceful dismount.

My husband keeps saying I don't look like I'm even trying, like its easy for me. It is NOT easy for me. I've been trying and getting so disappointed with failure. This has resparked my interest in poling. I know if I can climb it, then I can do a lot more with it. I just hope I can do it again and it wasn't just a fluke. I tried once more at the time, but got another pole burn on the top of my foot, so I just left it alone for the day and relished in my accomplishment. Hubby went out of town this morning. He said I'll be swinging around like a pro by time he gets back. I doubt it, but I'm certainly more apt to try.

I just wanted to share. I can't remember exactly when I started trying to do this, I think it was April, but I FINALLY have gotten somewhere. I am so glad I didn't give up completely. Roar!!!

Congrats! Just remember that everything takes time. There are some moves that i could NOT do months ago, and then when i tried it again recently, i got it on the first try. Sometimes your body just needs to build up strength in different areas.

I ALMOST took my pole down because I couldn't even do a pole hold, much less climb the darn thing.  Well its been just over 4 months now and I am amazed at what I have accomplished.  Don't give up ever, you can do it!!!!

What Lyme Lyte said! Don't give up just keep trying, the muscles learn and before you know it you're hanging by one leg drinking tea 😉

Ditto on what everyone is saying.  You WILL get more and more moves and you will get better and better!  And trust me, eventually, you won't get that pole burn anymore either!  CONGRATS on what you have accomplished!

That's so cool! Awesome stuff ! That burn on top of your foot will develop into a callous soon enough – I have them at the foot end of just about every toe about across the top of my feet!

I don't know what is going on, I was completely unable to do this again. I couldn't even do the scootch version. One attempt seemed like it was about to be successful, but my foot slipped, my tummy stuck to the pole, and I just let myself down and got the bumpy skid thing with my tummy skin grip. I kept thinking "mind over matter, you did it once, you can do it again, you're a beast, you're STRONG" and all the self encouragement in the world wasn't helping. I'm not giving up, just like "how can I do it near effortlessly ONCE and then I go back and its like it was before" With a lot of activities,  I try and try, and then have a breakthrough, and I never have trouble with it again, like riding a bike. This is not like that at all. I also can't figure out how to do a pole hold and lift my legs without banging my lady parts on the pole. I can bend the knees and lift my legs behind me, like in normal pole hold, I mean the kind where you have a bent knee V. Maybe I'm hunching my back more than I realize. I want so much just to have something to show for my hard work. I think I'm also stressing because I've lost a lot of weight, and now I'm 11 pounds from goal, and I feel impatient. I want it NOW lol. It feels so hard to build muscle and lose fat at the same time. I almost wonder if I should focus more on cardio to get rid of the fat and then rebuild any tone I've lost after the fact. But I also think my cardio is so much more effective when I'm working on strength training, but the scale doesn't budge. In case anyone wants to know, I'm 5'5, and 138lbs. I started my weight loss journey when I topped out at 191lbs.

I relate to the tummy bulge rubbing the pole.  When I do the pole hold, I just stick my belly into the pole, I don't even try to hold it away anymore, it will leave soon, but until then it has to pole too.  Instead of climbing up, you could try to slide down really slowly from a pole hold.  I had to do that for awhile before I could climb up consistantly.
