    HI All,

I've been on and off of the pole over the last year after an injury has made it almost impossible to pole. I have what feels like a permanent pulled muscle or bruise on my back, it's near my rib close above the shoulder blade. it doesn't hurt when I do normal day to day things like walking but as soon as I sneeze, pull some trousers on or lie in the wrong position I know it's there.

It's making me miserable because even a simple invert has become impossible.

I started seeing a chiropractor about 3 months ago and it seems to have gotten worse.

I'm really frustrated, can anyone help?

    Thanks

I am unable to offer any type of medical advice. I can however say I am sorry you are frustrated and feeling so badly for so long. : (  Can you go to a doctor for evaluation? Maybe get a second opinion on what is going on?

I had the same thing! I would start by seeing a different chiropractor. I was seeing a chiro without any success then switched to one who deals in sport related injuries. It was back to normal within a few visits.

I also recommend trying a different chiropractor.  It sounds to me like you have a rib out of place.  Has the one you are going to adjusted ribs too, or just your spine?

I hurt my back poling about a month or so ago….same story as you, didn’t hurt doing normal things but I just knew something wasn’t right with it and I would get pangs of pain doing random things (like standing on one foot!!)

Anyway, I went to a physiotherapist, he said that the joint where my rib joined my spine had locked up. He ‘mobilised it’ which basically was really hard and tough massage! He told me it was a pretty common injury…..for rugby players ha ha ha….

Anyway, after about 6 sessions with the physio

    Sorry hit save by accident….

So after about 6 sessions with the physio my back feels great again-I have to go to the gym 3 times a week and do exercises to strengthen up my back which I don’t mind doing.

I hope you get some relief soon, there’s nothing as bad as back pain Grrrrr…..best of luck!

Were you by any chance working on the inverted V(chopper) when you injured it?

It is common injury associated with incorrect scapular engagement and it can take quite a long time to have it heal. Especially, if you have continued to perfrom the move with incorrect form…..

Time, rest and correcting the scapular(shoulder blades & Rhomboids) will fix the problem eventually, as well as practicing some exercises using resitance that build strength in the area.

I will wait to to see if that is how you injured it before I make any suggestions….

As for the other—I agree…..Look for a different chiro or physio therapist.

@reenie I had the same problem when I started inverting. Since I didn’t have enough strength to hold the chopper position, I would just drop down from it instead of lowering with control or placing my legs on the pole into a snake (basic invert). I rested the injury for a week or two then thought it was ok to return to the pole and just ended up making it worse. Complete rest is necessary. Hope you get better soon!

i had a problem like this several months back as well while learning the chopper. it started with a pain which seemed like it came from somewhere between my rib cage and shoulder blade. at first it just hurt when i sneezed or coughed, and soon it started hurting even when i was just breathing,

anyway, i went to see an osteopath, and apparently it was just a sprained rib. some of my rib joints got stuck and she helped me get it unstuck.

i think it helped that the osteopath was a poler herself so understood the type of tricks we were doing and the kind of positions / strains our bodies were under.

if you visit a regular osteopath / chiropractor / physio, you probably need to do more explaining on the mechanics of the tricks you do etc. so he / she can understand and diagnose the problem better.

Have you gotten an Xray. I actualy broke two ribs, and didn't know it for months. I kept messing up the mending process. I wouldnt have know unless I finally got an xray.

I fractured a rub myself. I would make sure you know what your dealing with. If not I say complete rest….
