  • HELP ANYONE! I can’t climb cause it hurts & I keep slipping!

CLIMBING: I wrap my feet around the pole as my calves and upper knee are against the pole for friction. On a couple tries it starts to hurt and I slip anyway! I can't seem to get a good grip on it! When I get up with both my legs on the pole I do a sitting position. Then the tighter I do it my skin starts to stretch/pull in pain! I immediately slide and let go with a tenderizing pain! 🙁

STAYING UP: I'm not sure if I'm doing the hand positions correctly, but after seeing all these videos I knew I did it properly. Everytime I slip I spray the paper towel with windex and start cleaning. Maybe it was oil from my body? Hands? I don't know!

In my mind I can do it, but then the slipping prevents me from completing the trick or I can't climb high enough cause it hurts …

    HELP!

If you’re wrapping your feet around the pole, and the pain is in your feet you should definitely listen to what your body is telling you and learn to climb properly. The bottoms of your feet should never be involved in climbing or staying on the pole. It’s incredibly dangerous and damaging to the very fragile soft tissues in the foot. I suggest investing in veena’s video lessons if you haven’t already. She does a great job illustrating the basic climb. As an instructor, I firmly believe that beginners should not “teach themselves” the basic climb because there are a lot of variables going on that all need to happen at once that aren’t really possible notice from just watching videos of people climbing, such as what muscles are being engaged and what parts of the body are using lateral “pushing” force.

But without watching you climb, I can’t really say exactly why it’s not working for you. Climbing is really not an easy thing to get down, good luck!

there was another veener who had troubles with his pole climb, i´m sure you can already find a lot of great tipps at her thread: https://www.studioveena.com/forums/view/Pole_climb_help_20111120071112

it sounds a bit like your skin is very sensitive. everyone has some pain when starting to climb and sit on the pole and has to get used to it, but to me it seems your pain might be worse. maybe you just can´t get a good grip because the pain avoids that you grip tight enough (with the feet and legs). if this is the reason i would just give your skin more time to adapt and be careful that you don´t overstress it.

Pole climbs and sits are the first thing that I teach my students as their first "painful" move.  If you look back through all of the threads you will find numerous threads complaining about the pain involved in sitting.  It DOES subside, as does the pain in your feet.
