Okay when I was taking studio lessons way back in the beginning (over a 1 1/2 years ago) I was able to nail the inverted crucifix a few times. Sure, I slid down a little but at least i was able to get into it and hold it for a few seconds.

I just recently started trying to get it back. I am having a HUGE problem with it…I keep sliding down the pole before I can get my body lined up with the pole and into the inverted crucifix positioning. It's soooo frustrating. I have even tried the move from the floor (been doing this almost daily for last 2 weeks) and it feels like my legs are holding tight enough from the floor but when I try to get into it from a v invert or basic invert, I can't hold even the basic invert long enough to even try to start to get into the inverted crucifix. #1 my legs don't feel like they are gripping enough #2 my hands seem to have no grip or strength I can't tell if it's 1 or both???= I slide down quickly before I can get into position. I'm trying to take my time and be patient but at the same time, I'd really like to meet my goal of nailing it before Jan 1st but it is seeming grim!

Anyone have any tips? Does wearing shoes help hold the grip better? Itac? What might help? I am determined to get this because the inverted crucifix is the gateway to so many of the intermediate and advanced moves and I want progress dammit!

Are you super warm before trying this? Anything with the legs is such a pain if your not warm or if your pole is cold. Check your POCs too and make sure your using the right areas of the legs, Sometimes we get confused when upside down and forget what goes where. From an invert, it sounds like you just need to be patient with yourself and continue working on a stronger invert. If you can't hold the invert or bring the knees up over the hands, getting into a Crucifix will be challenging! You can still do your crucifix from the floor while your building up your invert. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_heart1.gif

Sweetie, don’t be too hard or put yourself under too much pressure. Sometimes frustration = slippery. Are you using any grip aids? If not, it might help. My skin tends to be super dry, but my hands will get sweaty, especially if I’ve had a lot of caffeine that day. You definitely want to nail your invert first. Try to relax…I’ve been working on the caterpillar for what seems like forever. I just try to have faith that one of these days I’ll finally get it : ) Hugs!

Hey cali 🙂 it took me a year!! Don’t beat yourself up. I found pvc trainers and hairspray on the thighs really helped. I also went into a crucifix position but didn’t let go and slid into a handstand. I then focused on tryng to arch my body and take my hands off the floor 🙂 like the other girls say make sure ur pole is uber hot 🙂 good luck. U can do it!!

Thanks for the tips guys I think it could be many of the things you all mentioned that are my problem.

@veena I can get into a basic invert easily and I have been making sure my knees are over my hands. I think my legs are the main issue, I do think that maybe my leg positioning may be wrong or something. I think I'll have to tape it, so I can see what I am doing with my legs. Also think alot of it is frustration and a little fear…being upside down while exciting, makes me a little nervous, it takes me a while to get upside down moves it seems. And my pole has been pretty cold…I can't seem to get it warmed up effiecently lately.

Thanks again guys, I'm not giving up hope!

Calipolepixie, I totally can relate to the fear of being upside down. When I first started doing inverts, I would get “confused” once I was hanging upside down as to which way to turn so I could get down without hurting myself. I would almost panic for a second until I could get my bearings. Do you have someone who knows how to spot you? Sometimes having a good spotter might help you feel more comfortable while you’re learning an inverted trick, but they have to know what they’re doing. Hang in there. If you’re getting upside down easily, that’s half the battle. The rest of it will come!!

Yes, fear is a totally normal road block for most moves. Make sure your using pillows or a mat and a spotter, also don't invert too high up stay really low, try sliding down a bit before moving into Inverted Crucifix. Pull pull pull into the pole with the back leg that is resting along the pole.https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_heart1.gif

Veena, have you ever thought about making some videos showing spotting techniques? I took a class once from an instructor who was an amazing trickster. After I got fully laid back, hanging from crossed ankles and couldn’t get back up, she stepped away and said “I don’t know how to spot people”. One of the other students ran from across the room to help me. I was too scared to ever take a class from that instructor again. I know that a lot of Veeners don’t have studios nearby that they can go to, but they might have a friend who can help them if they knew how to do it properly. Just a thought.

She didn’t know how to spot someone?? Weird. It’s not like its rocket science. I would do anything to help my students, and would never step away! All you needed was help getting up, I find that a simple spotting procedure. She just shouldn’t be teaching…. >.

@Cali – Grab yourself a bottle of corn huskers lotion and slather it on y our legs about 10 minutes before you start poling. It is pretty sticky, but not as sticky as itac. It might help. You will still need to engage your muscles, but it will keep you from sliding off the pole. Don't be afraid to use grip aides! They sell it at walmart, fyi. 🙂 Good luck!
