    Hi everyone!

My name is Naima but everyone calls me Kitty, I'm 21, I'm married to wonderful guy and have a daughter of 1 year 6 months. I'm new to this whole pole dancing thing (is it ok to say it this way?) I got hooked a few weeks ago at a "girls night out" party, we had an instructor and everything…  Like so many, I found it very fun and wanted to start doing it more often. I have a bit of a problem though, I'm very out of shape and overweight (I hate to admit it! But it's true.) I weigh 263 pounds (in my better days I weighed 170-185, funny I thought I was big back then which was 5 years ago.) Having a child didn't make this better either. I go to college and to mae some effort in losing weight and getting back in shape, signed up for a gym class. (to pass I have to work out at least 14 hours, this is good it will give me a boost to actually go do it so I won't fail the class.) And I'm going to diet starting next month, (I'm going to cut out al the wheat, potatoes, rice (except brown rice) and drink way more water. Of course I will be working out with the pole at home too. I was wondering, what else I could do? Thank you for any advice….

Welcome, congratulations on beginning your pole journey. Naima is a really pretty name, it's the name of my oldest friend's mother and I always loved it.

My only advice is stretch regularly and drink lots of water. It'll help with recovery and stretching is always good for flexiness for pole! x

I would look into the clean eating books.  It is not about dieting but eating better foods that your body needs.  The issue with cutting out a whole food group is that your body does need balance and you will start to get bored and possibly start craving those types of food.  Tosca Reno is the author.  There is a magazine she puts out called Oxygen that has a great website also.

Don't set huge goals but rather little ones that are achievable.  Instead of saying I want to lose 50 lbs by June 2012 do that in little increments.  And don't throw everything out the window if you fall off your plan.  Dust yourself off and get back on it.

(BTW Charley was the one asking about teaching)

I'm with Chem on the clean eating, although I have been a bad bad girl the last few months due to some stresses in my life and then the holidays. That is all about to change!

Thank you all! I know it's all about clean eating, but what I'm cutting out is the big stuff that always made me gain weight. And yes, I'm not setting a huge goal for myself right now, I knowI will never be "skinny" all the way so… 😛

sounds like you have a good plan!   and as long as you are eating brown rice, you should be getting all the carbs that you need.   plain brown rice is very healthy.  oatmeal is also good, and very filling.  just stay away from the baked goods and fried foods, and you will feel great!  🙂

Good luck on your journey!  I think your plan sounds like a great starting point.  When I started learning more about nutrition I cut down on refined breads and other starchy "filler" stuff and replaced them with whole grains like brown rice, and also beans, kinda like you 🙂  Whenever I try to cut down on something I like to replace it with something else, like instead of simply cutting out hot chocolate (one of my fave treats in the winter that I used to drink daily) I make tea instead.  Just remember to stay focused.  If you decide to eat something that's not in your plan, don't mentally punish yourself over it!  Evaluate if it was worth it: if you wanted to treat yourself and thoroughly enjoyed it, then it was probably a good thing, just as long as you return to your plan and stick with it most of the time you will do fine.
