I snagged myself an audition with a burlesque trouple looking for a pole dancer to be in their shows. Their troupe leader/owner is one of the top 50 burlesque performers of last year so I think they are pretty legit. I would love this opportunity and know it would be really fun to have a regular performance gig. However I think I am going to have to freestyle my audition because I also have to teach 3 Valentine's Day lap/chair workshops this week, plus my regular class, plus work at my regular job. I have just been insanely busy with pole lately which is a good thing but I have so much going on with teaching and rehearsing for another performance and my regular job that I haven't had time to work on this very much. My saving grace is that to my knowledge they don't do pole, so they won't be picking apart the entire thing like I would be worried about polers doing lol. The email said do an act 'appropriate for a burlesque show' I previously posted a video for what I tentatively wanted to do but I have researched some of the leader's videos and she usually has a humorous aspect of some kind so I am thinking of doing "I kissed a girl" now and I know that song better since I will have to mostly freestyle it. I will probably have time to run through a routine 5-10 times first and at least come up with a skeleton of a routine. However I am nervous because I've never had to do a dance audition before, I never even considered myself a dancer until now but I guess I am haha. Anyone have any tips?!

My advice would be to know your audience and keep it simple. I watched one of your videos that you had posted with the audition in mind, and it was great! You have a fantastic presence/personality on stage, so capitalize on that. Burlesque is all about character, engaging the audience, and being provocative. Since the audition is with a burlesque troupe, you might consider adding some really simple burlesque elements in addition to humor to the piece you perform, even if its freestyle, ie a glove or stocking peel, use a fan or boa etc? That will help make them see how well you can integrate a pole piece into a burlesque show, revue, performance etc. Because you know they would love a pole dancer so they can have that dance variety, but they really want a dynamic burlesque pole performer the most. I think you can do it and best of luck!

your best bet (and it sounds like what you are doing) is get a feel for the style of the troupe…are they old style burlesque or do they use newer music/themes as well? Go big with your theme/character, and since they aren't polers keep your tricks simple and playful. Now work on your tassle twirling in CAR! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_eek.gif

I am hoping to skate by on my smile and booty wiggles, that is usually how I get through other stressful times in life, such as speeding tickets or speaking in public https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

And thanks for all the advice!!! I am hoping it will be fine, just scary because I'm used to auditioning by video which is a million times less scary!
