Posted by PixiLouBell on March 1, 2012 at 5:16 pmhow many of you ladies do yoga also?? i jus did my first yoga dvd last night and wow does it feel awesome! i like it waaay better than high intensity workout dvds. so has it made you more flexible? it really seems like it does!

I don't have any video recommends, but I can say how much yoga and pole dovetail together. If you can, take a few group lessons or even privates. That has helped me quite a bit in my own progression on the pole. And having that instructor there to make subtle corrections will make a HUGE difference too. It's just like pole: you can learn from the vids but nothing substitutes for that personal feedback from someone.

How funny, today I was thinking about taking up yoga classes to help improve my flexibility and strength! I took a yoga class a few years back and almost fell asleep doing it because it was "boring" to me lol. I've never taken yoga since… But now that I've got pole dancing and the need to be more bendy, I might consider taking up yoga again.

I do yoga!! I have the best instructor!! She restorativally (?word?) kicks my butt in the most loving nurturing way!! My suggestion to anyone interested is to take a few days and try different styles as they are very different! I love a power vinyasa class but I also like to balance it with some yin yoga!! Have fun!!!

Check out pilates also! I have never personally tried yoga, but really want to. I will eventually. I take pilates classes from time to time and it really helps with body awareness. I am actually going to a private on tuesday- really excited. I have noticed it has helped with my strength thus helps with pole.

I've never done a formal yoga class – just done a couple of DVDs but I really like "Yoga for Regular Guys". It's athletic and doesn't focus on the meditation part. That's why I like it so much….the internal part of some styles just isn't my thing.

I've done yoga on my own over the years, but never really found a studio I liked. In fact, I recently had a terrible experience going to a workshop that turned out to be WAY too hard- it was supposed to be on the splits, but the teacher's idea of "warming up" was to spend the first hour pressing up from arm balances into handstands over and over without even using a wall for support! Only one person actually accomplished this– and that was the studio's owner! What a waste.
Anyway, one DVD I would recommend is the Gaiam brand "Yoga for Flexibility." It has 3 workouts on it: 1) a 45 min beginner's workout that is mostly explanation of poses, 2) a 45min flexibility workout that's hatha yoga, so it's very slow and you hold the positions for a long time, making it pretty intense, and 3) the reason why I'm recommending it: a 'bonus' 15min workout that is faster paced but also gets most of the main muscle groups. I'm kind of ADD, and have trouble doing anything for a long time (except pole), so 15 minutes was perfect. After using the 15min workout for a couple of weeks, I did see my flexibilty improve.

I am going to my first class on Monday!! I don't really know all types of yoga, but the one I'll be going to is more intence than… I don't know… classical yoga? 😀 So this is sport yoga, I'm not sure how it's in English, but it will involve not only some good stretching but also a lot of hard work with muscles, like some push-ups and so on. I can't wait, I've never been to a yoga class before :))

I teach a pole specific yoga class at my studio. All the movement in my class is specifically aimed at targeting areas pole dancers want to be more flexible. It's been my trademark class I have taken with me where ever I teach. I love it and I'm always evolving my material to offer the best experience possible for my students. It's such an amazing area to focus on and it makes you feel great physically and mentally. I've traveled to teach this class as a workshop too and it's great to have gotten different perspectives on the class. There are many different types of yoga. If you don't like one type, go try another. Even the same type with a different teacher can be a night and day difference. I greatly prefer classes or my own practice over videos. I don't own any videos, but if you have cable see if they have on demand classes to see what you like.
Most of the places I've been will offer free or heavily discounted classes if it's your first time because yoga is such a personal style thing. You should always feel comfortable asking the instructor anything and while what they do might be intimidating, don't be afraid to ask for a modification. Ignore the other students, they're there for their practice and you're there for your practice.
