I've seen a similar post elsewhere, but thought I'd start another as wanted to explain the exact problem!

Basically I'm getting a lot of rib pain from inverting. I haven't been doing it long so I thought it must be down to poor technique / not enough strength, but i've been very careful. Yesterday I inverted lots and was very careful to make sure I wasn't throwing myself into it and wasn't bashing the side, and it was fine. Afterwards I was pretty sore, but I had done a lot. Today, I do one invert and my side killlllllls. Now the obvious problem would be technique/strength, but I have done sports from a very young age and know I have the strength (this sounds arrogant, but I have competitively swam for years so have strong core and am pretty muscly!). I also was careful to make sure yesterday that it wasn't due to bashing into the pole or anything, and it didn't seem to be. It feels more like it rubs against the pole, and thats what causes it to hurt, rather than from a sharp impact…if that makes sense.

Also, to add to this. At Christmas I had pneumonia and tore some of my intercostal muscles from coughing. These took agggges to heal, and are on the same side that it hurts from inverting. Do you think this is related!? I was thinking of letting them heal and then wrapping up my side a bit and seeing if that helps? Its really frustrating as I do feel I have the strength just it hurts!

Any help would be so gladly received. I'm new to this place but having browsed through it looks amazing!!

When you say rib pain are you talking about up higher or down low. If it's up higher and hurts to inhale or exhale I bet you've pulled an intercostal musicle. Could be something else too but that's a pretty common inury. You might want to take a look at technique to make sure your scapula is neutral ( Lesson on neutral https://www.studioveena.com/lessons/view/0225276c-b90a-11df-856f-001b214581be )  and arms are not too high when preparing for the invert.

These lessons will help you build up the proper strength and tequnice for inverting.

I wanted to add onto this, torn intercostals take a long time to heal, you could be exasperating your prior injury from the Christmas tearing. Usually this type of injury can take up to six months or longer before it is fully healed. There are other things you can do while you rest and give yourself proper healing time of this area such as strength, flexibility, floor work, or dance flow technique. It may sound discouraging, but don’t let your limitations keep you from poling. Just modify your work out to allow proper healing. You don’t want to further injure the area. Also you can consult with your physician for recommended treatment options such as light stretching exercises that will assist in healing the area and therapeutic techniques that will alleviate discomfort during this time.

    Thanks both for these.

SV- I've done all these exercises – will still work on them but I feel I have the strength, its just causing pain from my side rubbing against the pole.

Kobojo – thanks. yeah, I have parentd that are dr's, so i've asked them and its probably just because the area is a bit tender. Its not hurting to breathe so I feel its different to how it was previously – ie, I dont think they are neccessarily torn – it feels more bruised. If this makes any sense. Its just a bit tender. I guess yeah, I'll take things slow, see if I can strap it up and see it the added protection helps.

Sounds like pole burn. You will get used to this as you will learn moves that you will hold instead of sliding. Also brass burns more than say a chrome would.

Tha'ts great to hear cesca! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif Maybe double check to make sure your placing the pole far enough in towards the arm pit when you invert, then you wont place as much pressure on the rib. Feel free to post a video if you ever want some feed back.

Thank you thank you thank you 🙂 You're all brilliant. I'll give it a few days, strap it up a bit, and try and figure out what my technique is like 🙂

I actually broke my ribs with improper form…i wasnt facing my pole enough when doing basic inverts..so when I inverted I was inverting with a lot of pressure on my sides and back ribs. I sealed the deal by pushing myself too hard and trying to do tricks I wasnt ready for..Like Allegra and jade. If it hurts..STOP..that's your body saying you need to rest that area. Take a couple steps back to some more basic moves to improve form, before you actually hurt your self. I had to take many months off of the Pole, because ribs are very hard to heal. I know Veena has some great preps and strenghtening moves..I would review those.
