New subbie with second thoughts
Posted by nefashpink on April 21, 2012 at 1:18 pmHello pole beauties! Three days ago I put up my pole and each time I’ve touched it I’ve looked at it as if it has eyes! You ladies make it look sooo easy,the pain and lack of being able to do anything but slide to the floor has me having second thoughts! Any one out there willing to share their beginner experiences. Maybe I’m expecting too much too early

i have been doing pole since January this year and it is a very tough journey but stick at it as your strength will improve and you will get better. Starting pole is the best thing i have ever done i am stronger more toned and the buzz you get when you finally crack a move is amazing. Dont give up and the lovely ladies here are always good for some support. Good luck x

Oh yes, sliding, kicking the pole, bruises…more slide and more bruises. At some point we all look at that damn pole and ask ourself " what was on my mind?" I spend the first 2 months looking like i had been hit by a truck lol. I fell on my face trying stupid trick. Or end up stoping pole for months because i don't feel the inspiration anymore.
But it come back, you'll get stronger, it will be less painful and even the crazy trick don't seem that crazy and don't hurt (much) anymore. Someday you will realise that the move you could only dream of,you can do it. I remember how amaze i was when i first saw a knee hold and thinkning to myself that if i ever got there that would be the top and i could die happy. Well it's been check from a list a long time ago but i remember well how much it hurt at the time.
The girls here are really supportive because they know what we go through, especially when we start. We've been there too, it's not just you. And keep in mind that it's not the destination, it's the journey…Good luck https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

I remember on my first class I couldn’t lift myself for more than an instant. I kept at it twice a week and eventually got to doing shoulder mounts (which I can no longer do from a break from pole). I remember it took me quite a while to get the cradle spin. I remember learning most spins pretty quickly (not sure why,) but I learn tricks much more slowly. I have been doing this for about 3 years and there have been a ton of girls surpassing my abilities just in a few months. It doesn’t bother me. I learn at my own pace, as do you. Don’t compare yourself to others. You will get the moves over time. Just listen to your body, and most importantly, have fun!!!

Welcome to the site!! Everyone has some great advice! Make sure your starting with some strength building first to condition your body. Many moves seem impossible the first time, and before you know it tah dah! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif

I believe we have all been there. When I got my first pole I thought that maybe I had bought a fake, or a different kind of pole than the ones on the videos, because I couldnt do anything with it! it was just a round piece of cold hard slippery metal on the middle of the study. Many times I told myself… "this was a big mistake…" and at the start i didnt like the bruises or the soreness one bit. I think the only reason I didnt gave up right away was because I am too stubborn and hate to admit defeat. Don't worry… it will get better 😉

Stay with it! When I started it for fun and fitness I was so psyched. Then came climbing and I told myself “ill never be able to climb more than one”. In time…it happened. Same thing when it came to inverts, crucifixes, etc. It seems daunting, but keep working and slowly but surely the strength builds. Remember-everyone develops at a different pace, and depending on your own body (I’m a curvy gal..heavy by pole standards). Some moves will be more/less difficult. But finally nailing a move is an ultimate reward!! 🙂

Hey nefashpink, Just wanted to say I feel your pain as well. I am a newbie to and, like you, I have issues with pain and sliding to the floor as well. I get so frustrated when I try to climb the pole and the pain in the top of my foot is excruciating and I always come down with a huge bruise on the top of my foot and think to myself, I can't do this, it's too hard and it hurts, but I refuse to give up. I have stainless steel pole that's not very good quality (it is constantly getting loose from the ceiling and I always have to stop and tighten) and I slip and slide all over the thing. Just waiting to be able to buy a good quality pole with a different finish and smaller diameter and maybe that will help with the sliding. I tried the pole sit the other day, and it felt the skin was coming off my legs, lol:), but I figure if I keep it up, eventually I will get it and be able to do some of the tricks the ladies on here can do. I also do Veena's workouts on here and other workouts on my own. Good luck:)

,,,,,,,,opps pressed enter too early. What made the difference for me was GETTING VEENAS LESSONS, AND BUYING A BIG MIRROR. I started with the lessons and used the mirror to check form. A year later I am doing things I never thought. I am 46 and now can even do the Shoulder Mount (barley, but still). DONT QUIT!!!!!!!!!!!
Plus put up videos for positive reinforcement from the "pros" and to look back at your progress. You will be amazed!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As far as strength, when I started pole over four years ago I was very active with regular gym workout, did interm step aerobics, an awesome powerflex weight class, etc. None of that made a difference with pole, it was as if I'd never worked out before. Pole was a whole different world and I had to start all over with strength building, etc. I couldn't do a pole hold or anything. I kept at it and strength came. I remember having the deer caught in the headlights look for new spin or trick LOL
The hardest thing to learn was taking my time to develop strength and not rush to do something I wasn't ready for. Thus, had to stop for a couple of months due to seriously pulled muscle in rib cage attempting basic invert by kicking into it. I actually thought I fractured a rib. I share this, not to scare you, but encourage not to rush, more importantly don't compare yourself to others.
Unfortunately pain is part of it as you and your skin get used to a new spin/hold/trick. I've accepted I may not get everything and doesn't matter what others are doing; and if I'm doing the same thing over and over, that's okay as long as I work at it getting better, etc. That being said, can't wait to see your journey and happy dance with you as you begin accomplishments 🙂

Oh yes..pole is a roller coaster ride. I think that is what is great about it.. It is your journery and dont compare your self to others. Everyone has there own speed or rate of building strenght and endurance and understanding the "physics of the pole" You have to forget everything you know and be new..
Remember…weather matters, skin temperture matters, room temperature (how do you spell that darn word?) matters, humidy matters, skin chemistry matters, did you contaminate the pole with some product you used? =slippery pole, pole finish and diameter matter, and as always YOU have to bend around the pole =up and down you will slide…more sideways you will stay better.. This is not a linear workout.. you have to let the pole hold you up… not the other way around.
