  • Question about Veena Grip for shoulder mount

Posted by LillyBilly on June 3, 2012 at 5:00 pm

Following the discussions I've read about the dangers of TG lately, I've been trying to find an alternative grip to use in shoulder mounts. The problem is that while I do not feel a big difference between grips in comfort, all the other grips lack in esthetics.

What I like about twisted grips is the nice line they create with the pole,  twisted hand and body. In this grip, the bent hand creates the least disturbance with the dancer's form, so the result is more graceful. All other grips violently break the body lines, and are therefor ugly in my eyes.

I was thinking that the Veena grip with switched hands (straight hand is the one on the side of the pole)  is quite similar to twisted grip as far as hand placement goes, and it seems comfortable enough.

Do you think this grip is safe to use?

I'm not as advanced/expierenced as others; however, I love the veena grip for shoulder mount, actually I love it for super shoulder invert and have begun practicing going into gremini from it.  I definitely a lot more secure in this grip in comparison the cupped grip.

Thanks, girls, but what I meant was – is it still a safe grip if I switch the straight and bent hands?

The safeness of the grip comes from the fact that you have an opposable thumb grip to stop you from sliding down (or falling off) when you invert. When using the cup grip, you have all the fingers on one side, and nothing on the side that's closest to your body and therefore you will risk slipping when transitioning into another move. As you've said, there are dangers to the TG, these are more related to possible shoulder injuries as opposed to falling off.

So, back to your question – it is still a safe grip if you switch arms. In fact, Jamilla Deville teaches it that way in her Art of Pole DVDs.

i have never used veena grip but i like cup grip myself. i think go with a grip that is safe and comfortable coz most ppl will be looking at your legs rather than hand position. you can hide a lot of sins if you have pointed toes!

For the top half of the shoulder mount the Veena grip gives you the most security. This is the only grip I can use to create a true straight line for the super invert. If you switch the hand placement it's not the Veena grip, and it doesn't offer the same security when the extended arm is on the same side as the pole. With the arms switched the grip isn't bad for the joints so it IS "safe" if that's what your asking, but with my experiance it's not as secure. The balance is different with the hands switched.

To me this is a clean line. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gifhttps://www.studioveena.com/galleries/view/4f8834cb-19e4-4b78-95e5-285c0ac37250
