We had a significant amount of downtime yesterday due to technical issues that Godaddy was experiencing.  We take your ability to access StudioVeena.Com very seriously and have taken  steps to mitigate the possibility that this will happen again.

First I would like to explain what happened.  While our servers are not hosted at Godaddy our DNS was.  DNS is the system that tells your computer where to go find the website when you type "www.studioveena.com" into your web browser.  While Godaddy has not yet released a statement it appears that Godaddy DNS servers were hit with what is called a "Denial Of Service" attack.  This is achieved by pushing so much traffic to a web service that no other user can get through, much like the holidays when all the phone circuits can be tied up.

This failure showed a definite weakness in Godaddy's core architecture and we have already moved away from their DNS service.  We have new DNS servers now that are replicated to 5 different locations across the world, each location with its own replication across multiple internet connections.  This new level of redundancy makes it nearly impossible that we will experience downtime for this reason again.

Additionally the new DNS service sets us up well for additional growth.  We already use six servers to keep StudioVeena.Com running smooth and don't expect anything but growth in our future.

We love you all and want to make sure that you have the best experience we can deliver and this rapid change to a new DNS provider is part of that commitment to excellence.  Please let us know if you have any questions.

WOW!  I'm really impressed – it was just a few hours for me that I couldn't access – it was a pain but no big deal – I am glad I wasn't the only one experiencing issues.  Stuff happens and I think this is the first time since the inception of SV that there has even been a problem!

Thank you so for being so thorough and even going above and beyond and explaining what's going on!!!  WOW!

Wow!  LOL to the DOS attack…… I'm sorry it happened, but I still find it funny :-p 🙂   What will hackers think up next?….  At least it wasn't on your side though….. (with 6(!!!!) servers I sure hope not….. )     lol

Kudos on being so informative though…you don't get that in a lot of places…..

The "hackers" are actually a well-known group called "Anonymous". It strongly opposes internet censhorship and surveillance, and has hacked various government websites. It has also targeted major security corporations. GoDaddy got hit because they support the SOPA act and were warned to stop. I wouldn't be surprised if they attack them again until they are official shut down. There not a group to be messed with.
Good move on SV to get away from GoDaddy.

Yeah, that was my fear, that some little hacker out there was getting his skillz  leveled up on veena. We've had similar problems at hosted blogs at work.

I really support the move away from GoDaddy for multiple reasons. 😉

So it turns out that it was in fact not a hacker.  Godaddy has realeased a statement explaining failure of their network, so the Anonymous user who was bragging about it may very well have been lying.  This however does not change our reasons for moving our DNS servers.  Godaddy's current architecture provides a single point of failure which we find to be unnacceptable.  Our new DNS host will provide a much more stable platform for DNS.

Here is the quote from a Godaddy representative:

Yesterday, GoDaddy.com and many of our customers experienced intermittent service outages starting shortly after 10 a.m. PDT. Service was fully restored by 4 p.m. PDT. The service outage was not caused by external influences. It was not a "hack" and it was not a denial of service attack (DDoS). We have determined the service outage was due to a series of internal network events that corrupted router data tables. Once the issues were identified, we took corrective actions to restore services for our customers and GoDaddy.com. We have implemented measures to prevent this from occurring again.
