Hit a Brick Wall
Posted by Caroliiine on October 9, 2012 at 5:44 amHello all… I was just wondering does or did anyone at any stage feel as though they had hit a brick wall with the pole? Its like I have pole block… It feels like I havint learned anything new recently… https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_rambo.gif I go to a pole class every week and my teacher is amazing but we always seem to do the same stuff and I feel like I am behind, its like she is jumping straight into a 10 move combo and we havn't learned every move individually… Personally I would rather have two of them moves perfect than 10 sloppy ones… Would I be better training more at home or what do you suggest! Or am I just not giving enough…Any Advice will be greatly appreciated … Thank you in advance! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_elephant.gif

shake things up! Try a different class or a different studio. Or even try a different form of dance! For me that helps me break out of my rut and get inspired again.

I think trying out a new studio/teacher can be beneficial at times. I go to a large studio and there are times when I feel stuck too.( I have been there for the last 3 months or so :(). I have started working on things like flow and strength. I also recently started down the competitive route.
I think it is frustrating when you are trying to get the moves to be perfect and they are already moving on to the next thing and I wasn't ready.
Different forms of dance can be helpful too. Hopefully we can both get unstuck!!

I've been there. In addition to trying a new teacher, maybe you can do a single class or workshop at another studio. Sometimes it helps to shake it up and hear a different perspective. Good luck!

I dont have much of a choice with dance classes and or pole classes in the area I live, they are all too far away!
I have looked into ballet classes – which I may have to pay for privately because of the lack of sooo many cool things here haha… but I always wanted to do ballet so I think that may get me unstuck! I went to pole at home the other day and I actually had no motivation whatsoever! So I am going to try some dancing without going on the pole at all! It will help for freestyle and routines and switch it up a bit! I think I am in a bit of a rut because I always do the same training! And I teach alot of beginner classes and quite frankly… I get bored!
Thank you all for you advice! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_elephant.gif

I have no studios, and no money for other kinds of dance classes, and haven't for a while… but the pole block still happens!
What I like to do is kind of… go back to basics. I've decided recently that I'm going to take pretty much every move I know, and try to find every creative way into and out of that move! It's quite the challenge, and I'm very excited about it- with hope, it'll make me a better dancer, and also bring out some new strength that I may not have had otherwise.
Working on combos, or just the dancing aspect, or trying to come at everything from a different angle is usually helpful. This is what happens with a lot of artistic pursuits, we find ourselves uninspired and need some kind of kickstart…
So, that's what I would recommend! Go at the dancing thing differently 🙂 Try something you never thought you would on the pole! See if there are any moves from waaaayy back that you wanted to nail but just forgot about, or any neat combos that you've never tried!

I am new here and my first class is tomorrow, but I have a trick that works with other creative pursuits. Its sort of like a game with index cards. Make a few decks of cards. One deck is poses, one deck is attitudes or emotions. You can also make a deck with floor moves. Choose one card from each deck. Lets say you get “sad,” “flag” and “blank floor move.” (Sorry, I don’t know the names of anything yet.) Your challenge is to move from the floor move to the position in a sad way. You can pick over and over and get different results. The more cards, the more possibilities. You could also do double poses instead of a floor move or double floor moves on you rest day. You could pick 12 cards and create a random routine. You could pick two emotions and switch emotions in the middle of the routine. It works for other artistic endeavors so why not for poling?

Great idea 🙂 could either use words, i.e. names of the poses/moves etc. – or pictures – or both. Years ago I saw a system for choreographing ballet moves which was done on rows of parallel lines (a bit like a music score) can’t renember what it was called though.

That is great advice!! Really good ideas… I am going to make a routine to record as I have never done it before… another good idea for that is play out an animal or even a character from a musical or film instead of an emotion! You sound like youll be good at this already and you havint even started yet… have fun at your first class … your gonna be hooked 🙂
Possibilties are pretty endless whe you use your imagination Ill post my video here when I do eventually get around to recording it!
So many things for me to do now and so little time combos routines, unmastered tricks and new tricks… I think I need a crash mat by the sound of all of this! haha
Thanks ladies keep that advice coming… Coz I think this happens everyone!

I’m already hooked….LOL. I watch pole videos every night and study them. I’m saving for a pole. Once I have a pole I will be unstoppable (evil snicker.)
