spinning pole
Posted by vamp79 on October 17, 2012 at 9:21 pmI’m so frustrated with spinningon my pole. I decided to start trying it out and everytime I climb it spins out of control. How do I get that smooth slow spin that I see on so many videos?

General rule of thumb when on spinning is that the closer your body is to the pole, the faster you'll go. If you stick your leg out while climbing, or an arm, that might slow you down.

I did try that but it just felt crazy. One moment I was spinning fast and then I would almost come to a complete stop. Hoping that a lot of practice will fix this problem.

It does take some practice to learn to control the spin. One thing that is super important is that you do not use any "swing" like you do in static spins for momentum. It is more of a lift and then a pose, if you will. I started with easy "poses" like fireman and attitude and back hook. A couple of things to try:
Instead of a climb, maybe you can just start with a fireman. Make sure you don't use any swing for momentum. You will be in a sort of "squat" position, so your bum will keep you from spinning too fast. Now move into a standing position. You will start to spin quickly, so squat back down into fireman to slow down. So basically you're doing a squat into a stand and back to a squat. You might get a better feel for it that way.
Try a chair. Again, don't use any swing. Just place your hands into position and lift off. Because you are already away from the pole, you won't spin too fast.
It does take time to get used to the spinning. Videotape yourself, and you will find that it doesn't look as if your spinning as fast as it felt like! Hope this helps!

You might already know all of this info on this vid but I'll post it, for others who might have the questions about spin mode. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtinAzp17s0&list=UUup79MtZnWP_SCAHeVlmzdQ&index=5&feature=plcp
All of the spin lessons here also cover using a spinning pole. There are slight adjustments you need to make. Like most everything, just keep at it. Imagine how slowly you move through water and try to translate that sloooow movement on to your spinning pole.

One thing to also remember, is that it always feels like youre spinning faser than you really are 🙂 When I got my pole, I imedeatly had to start spinning, and I tought my pole was put up wrong. It didnt feel like when I saw others do spins. Untill I saw myself on video 🙂 It looked like it was fluid , and I realized the importance of letting myself get used to it 🙂

Thanks for the link Veena. I will look at the videos tonight :). I will definitely record myself as well. Maybe you guys are right and it only feels like I’m spinning too fast. Its just so weird and makes me kind of dizzy. I’ve tried a few times to switch to spinning and end up so frustrated that I change my pole back to static. Will try to be more patient this tome around.

I think alot of us has had trouble getting used to spinning around 🙂 I find it helps to focus on the pole while transitioning into another spin. And you've used spinning mode for awhile, it will be easier. 🙂

As someone who use to get dizzy/motion sick really easy, you will build a tolerance to it.
I use to squeal and jump off the moment i felt no control or that i was going to spin myself sick. I hated the overall feel of a spinning pole to be honest. But now after close to 2 months of it, i only hesitate at first spin and then it doesn't bother me. It amazing how the body just falls into place after a while. In words of the beloved Alethea … "push past".. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cool.gif{Saphyre, amazing tips by the way!}

Its probably not a good thing, but I learned on spin first and I only practice on spin. The only time I have really put my pole on static was when I learned the cross knee release.
The spinning really bother me at first. When climbing try not to throw yourself into it. The motion sickness does subside after time 🙂

I'm glad to hear that the dizzyness is normal and gets better. Can't wait to actually "see" how fast i'm really going. Must record myself today..
azblanco – I do kind of throw myself into the climb since I'm used to doing it while on static. It will be tough to train myself not too.

I love the spin setting! I remember once doing a basic fireman about halfway up the pole, and a friend was there and just kept pushing me everytime I went by. I thought I was going to take out the pole and bring the house down with it. I eventually got to such speed that I could no longer hold on and had to slow down. So much fun! It does take getting used to. Everytime I actually go to practice on spin mode, I start like its static and immediately have to pause and reset my brain to think spinny.
