Which should someone learn first? Is there one that is best or is it a personal preference? Tell me your stories and opinions.

For me it was shouldermount way, way before handspring.  Shouldermount can be learned low near the floor, making it safer to learn.  But I think once you're into the advanced moves, it is really personal.  It will depend on your personal strengths and weaknesses on the pole.

I learned the shouldermount before the handspring. Both are extremely dangerous moves which need to be executed properly or they can result in injury or paralysis. you need to build up the proper amount of strength in order to do them safely.

Haha, when reading the title I thought this thread is about a cool new combo https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

I think for most people for the handspring there are lots of moves you need to be comfortable with before working on it, because you need to know how to hold yourself up there once you can handspring up. Whereas for the shoulder mount you just work on the conditioning exercises and then one day you are strong enough to do it (if you know how to do the inverted crucifix).
