Fonji prep?
Posted by Jag5303 on October 22, 2012 at 10:38 amSo how does one go about doing the fonji? I have a strong deadlift shoulder mount along with a strong flag and almost a deadlift flag mount to brass monkey. So I feel like I’m strong in all areas of the fonji…. Do you just bite the bullet and give it a shot, or is there an in between step/prep I should know about? Eeeeek 🙂

There are a few threads and videos on here. This is probably one of the most useful ones:

The in-between step I use (and have taught to others) is to get used to the rolling/flipping motion by first practicing it in the following way: place the pole against your dominant shouldermount shoulder. Extend your body into a plank-like position, with just your feet on the floor. Practice rolling toward the pole and into the face-down "catch" position until you feel confident doing it. Then try the actual fonji, with your legs tucked the first few times. Once you can catch with tucked legs, try it with your legs extended. There's a timing aspect; your legs should go a split second before you roll/flip.

I am a big ole wuss. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif
I keep saying I am going to start on Fonji and then never do it. Maybe I really will this time.

When i think of p.a., the word wuss never comes to mind

That's helpful Elektra, thanks. I want to start working on this but I'm terrified of anything shoulder mount… I hardly ever use them because I feel like I'm going to break my neck, even though I know I'm just being silly…

@ Kyrsten – You should feel really comfortable in the shouldermount before starting the fonji. Training down your shouldermount plank would probably help a lot. I also find it much easier to do if I'm being properly spotted, if you can manage that. (I know you go to some sort of studio….?)

Wow great tips! Definitely something I’ve been wanting to try too. I have a good strong shoulder mount flip onto the pole too, and I remember how terrified I was of that until I just bit the bullet and did it! I’ve also been practicing just the motions from standing, I think the hardest part for me will be the flag mount back up.
