Have you seen this done before? The only way would be to pop out your top arm to cup grip, and I've never seen that from half flag. Usually it's done from an elbow grip ayesha.

I've tried this. it's hard as HELL. Oona Kivela does it in quite a few of her recent performances, and she tried to teach us in a workshop…. you have to get a SUPER hard swing with your legs and pull yourself away from the pole…. keep your legs swinging even after you have caught in a cup grip and cartwheel your legs overhead.

@amy, when you say she tried to teach you…could ANYONE do it?

Elektra, I think she's talking about this:

Skittles is such a beast! I'm nowhere near a fonji so I don't have any tips, but you can see how she moves in this video pretty clearly.

    Thats the one Krysten!

Thanks for the tip Amy. I think I do tend to drop my legs on the last swing, when I should really try to push out. I wonder if its also a timing thing? I can’t figure out when I should turn to the ceiling

Nope. No one could, and the class was pretty advanced 🙂 the boy in class got closest. There’s a total commitment issue- you have to really WANT to go upside down. It’s a lot like the cartwheel. When you watch other people do it you can see they don’t get close to inverting in the move. You also need to really pull your body out hard enough (with the leg swing) that you’re nearly horizontal before you start to turn your chest, if that makes sense. I got close to that but was too chicken to really invert in it. It’s really tough for someone to spot you in it….

Do you think its more of a commitment/momentum issue than a strength issue? I found fonji didn’t take as much strength as Ithought, but commitment to getting over the fear!

That's funny. I'd be thinking 'nuh-uh…show me something I can actually DO..or learn to do, cuz that's NOT it!'  lol

Oh yeah I have seen that before.

@PoleWarrior: Do you have grip changes down, like in an ayesha?  I can tell you from working on them myself that they're pretty damn hard.  It's not just a commitment issue like it is with the fonji, it's more of a balance issue.  I'd work on that until my grip changes were really good before attempting the grip change from flag, which sounds like it involves extra mechanics.

Thats an excellent point about balance elektra thank you! Perhaps I’ll try an elbow grip to cup iron x as prep first

I asked this a few weeks ago to Bendy Kate when she was in the Netherlands 🙂 I actually was asking for a flag to true grip handspring, because I think that one's cooler 😀 She told me to slide the bottom hand down, and in this video of Oona I also clearly see the bottom hand sliding down http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-kRaR8yfqg  a     at 0.52, maybe that would help you?
