Hey ladies! So, I've been poling for a little over 2 weeks now, but I have a little situation…I can only pole once a week! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_confused.gif I'm only poling in a studio right now, and because of time constraints (work and other stuff) I can only get there really once a week, twice if I'm really pushing it. I don't have my home pole yet…I'm saving up for an X-pole since going for the cheaper ones might end me up with a broken neck! I want to work on other stuff while I'm not poling though, so I don't lose it in the seven days I'm not, plus it'll help me get fit regardless. I really dislike going to a regular old gym, and regular old machines (one of the reasons I started poling in the first place! LOL) so my question is what kinds of exercises can I do at home between poling sessions? Flexibility? Maybe some strength training? Or just working on my floor work?

If you don't already have Veena's lessons, get them. A lot of her conditioning lessons can be done without a pole, or with something else to hold onto like a chair.

I pole at home without a studio, and I do lots of things off the pole. Pushups, core work, squats and leg lifts, yoga sun salutations, resistance band and free weight exercises, and pullups on a bar that attaches to a doorway. I also have a foam roller for stretching and flexibility training (Veena also has lessons for that.) I am working injured right now and can't really dance, but I'm using this as an opportunity to do strength training off the pole.

Another good tip would be to take related fitness classes like yoga or pilates, which work muscles in a similar way. You can also do these things at home with nothing but a mat and maybe a computer to watch videos, although taking a few classes in the beginning is essential for learning good form.

PS I also dislike regular gyms. I'm much more comfortable exercising at home, and a lot more likely to do it as a result. Spending the time and money to outfit a little area for myself was worth a lot more to me than a gym membership I'd hardly use.

I do light stretching & conditioning every other day for 10-15 min stints, as well as a lil arm & core strength conditioning–push ups, pull ups, plank holds, bicycle sit ups etc. I’ll just drop on the floor & do sets of 20 through out my day. When I worked, I would close my office door, take 5 mins 2-3x a day & do a set of sit ups & push ups.

Do you have your splits yet? work on your splits. Do a little warm up on the floor moving around and against the wall if you please. I do that dance for like 30 min to an hour then stretch for an hour and work on your splits that way by the time you're doing super cool stuff on the pole you look extra awesome with splits…. Or back flecibility too, thats another nice thing to have.

I'd say definitely try out some other workouts like Yoga, zumba, pilates, any kind of dance (belly dance even?) – all of which you can do from a dvd or computer. I also second Veena's stuff, we all know she is amazing and her lessons are great =)

Everyone has great suggestions! I'd like to add pilates to the list and I'll share one of my other favorite past times….hula hooping! It's so fun and a good workout on its own too! I use it for a warm up before I pole and use it for a workout on days I don't pole dance too! I'll add conditioning to my hooping session if I don't pole dance.

Jadorebree, if you do end up taking the lessons here basic hooping is included. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! I really like the hula hooping idea! Playing with a hula hoop was one of my fave things to do as a kid and I was really good at it, maybe it transferred over to my adult years! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

I wasactually looking into a studio in my town, they don't have poles or anything but they offer yoga, zumba, pilates, etc.

You guys have convinced me to get Veena's lessons even more, even though I don't have my pole yet…I really wanna start working on my flexibility. It's basically non existant. Lol.

Jadorebree, Here's a video on making your own hoop it's an inexpensive why to try different sizes. https://www.studioveena.com/videos/view/4e89c4a6-5c1c-4036-ad98-42e60ac37250 https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif
