I'm pretty pissed. I had my studios 3 year anniversary party last night that had student and instructor performances, and I've been practicing for this event for months. I performed last year as well, but it was still only my 2nd choreographed routine and my 4th time pole dancing in public. My whole routine went great right up until the very end, where I went into my yogini but for some reason I lost hold of my foot, and then by the time I tried to grab it again, the song ended and I had to stop. I'm dying to see the video, I'm really curious to see if it was that obvious to the crowd that I didn't get to do the trick that I wanted. It really sucks because the yogini was one of those tricks that I learned really early on, I have never had any problems with it before and could probably do it blindfolded on a fast spinning pole. I have no idea what went wrong this time. Has anyone else ever had this happen to them during a performance? It would be comforting to hear similar stories and how you dealt with it. (It also doesn't help that within the first 15 seconds of my routine I bumped my head on the pole very loudly during floorwork, but thank god nobody really saw unless you were in the front row, hehe.)

Performances RARELY go as planned. With something like pole (especially on spin mode) things almost never work out the same each time. I had my 4th public performance last night as well. Things went wrong. Almost every performer had something unexpected happen. It happens and it happens more than you think and usually it feels worse than it looks on video and to the audience. I can not wait to se your video!

Um… yeah. It definitely happens. *sigh* I've fallen in performance, and that's no fun. So take comfort in that even if you didn't complete that trick, you didn't fall off of the pole! I'm just going to leave this here… http://youtu.be/-0WTb_zIGRI

It happens. I messed up during my contortion and faceplanted LIVE on air for the Channel 6 News in San Diego three days ago. I'm still embarrassed, The trick is to learn to laugh at your mistakes. I made a joke that maybe i'll get a redemption on Tosh.0 and that made everyone laugh. Don't let it get you down, if I find myself on youtube i'll post it here lol 🙂

It happens a lot…Even to the pros, so don’t be so hard on yourself. You can only go out there & do your best. When mistakes happen you just have to brush yourself off & get back up and keep going.

@Danielle thank you for being so vunerable and sharing your vid. I was deeply touched by it & inspired me to remember to keep going even when things don’t go as planned.

I agree, things do not go as planned all the time. I competed for the first time recently and my spin pole is slower than the comp pole. I used much more momentum than needed and could not get into my flag and had to improvise. It killed me cause it was not what I had practice day in and out. But in the end, I had fun and my husband loved it and that’s all that matters!

Stuff happens, but in the end I think we are more upset and notice more than others!

Danielle, thanks so much for sharing. Not only was it a beautiful performance, but I really admire your courage and professionalism in going out and doing it again after the fall. It may be tough for you to watch, but I think it's amazing.

its okay girl! we ALL mess up on stage! and it usually feels way worse in our heads than it is on film, or to the audience.  Michelle Shimmy posted this on her FB page a little while ago, and I'm so glad she did. it happens to the pros as well, and we all survive to dance another day!  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3CCNp_3DXA

That Shimmy video is awesome! I love that she posted that. While I have only performed pole a couple of times, I have performed trapeze and silks many times, and every performance is different. There's always something. Sometimes the apparatus gets stuck in the rig and you have to switch sides of the stage and re-rig in a heart beat, or the musicians don't wait for you, or they misread your cues and cut your piece really short. Sometimes the sound system doesn't work, multiple times in a row. Sometimes I am just not on my game and do something stupid that looks really really bad. I loved getting a chance for each and every performance. I think you're performance was probably just fine 🙂 Especially if the only thing that went wrong was the very end. I have noticed that when things go wrong for me in performance, they usually aren't the tough things I have been rehearsing to death. They are usually the easy things that I don't spend time focusing on, because its so easy I don't ever think it will be a problem.

Awe thanks everyone for the kind words! 🙂 It was a tough thing to shake off but I’m better now. And you’re right, it is very hard for me to watch still. But I survived to pole another day! Ain’t no fall gonna keep me down.

I messed up a little bit in my first performance the other night – I went in for my one handed attitude, quickly tried to add my leg for a cross ankle fireman but my leg somehow slipped and I went straight to the floor – my heart sank when I felt myself slip but I just improvised an arm movement on the floor and carried on like nothing happened so I don’t think it looked too awful. The video is on here if you want to see what I mean 🙂
Also, be aware that when you watch the video back, you are waiting for your slip up to happen, you know it’s there and therefore it will seem worse to you. Whereas others won’t notice nearly as much 🙂 I cringed when I first watched mine back but try to watch it through the eyes of someone who doesn’t know your routine and has never seen it before, and it’s nowhere near as bad 🙂

i have fallen out of iguana mount- talk about UNGRACEFUL!!! lol… but i think a good way to deal with it is to look sternly at the pole and shake your fist at it.  the crowd immediately cheers for you and embarrassment is averted
