Unfortunately, moves are referred to by different names. Can you give specific or video of what you are talking about? A video by you or someone else doing it.

On a basic back knee hook:
Step with outside foot close to pole and then pivot pivot pivot pivot pivot (you get the picture). At some point your butt will be towards the pole and that leg that you stepped next to the pole with will touch the pole. When it touches the pole, lift both legs and spread your knees and try to touch your toes together. It looks prettier if you arch your back and look over the inside shoulder.

I have the mechanics down. I even tried it with more momentum coming from a peeler spin … I guess I just need to practice practice practice

Best advice I can possibly think of: Push your hips forward. It feels awkward and unsteady at first, but it'll bring everything into alignment.
You'll get it soon! I've fought with spins for a long time before 🙂 I got them eventually!

Try out the positioning from kneeling on the floor first, using a mirror to correct yourself.
Pay close attention on your hips as mentioned by runemist. -
can you hold to position static and slide down (without the rotation?) Can you do a front hook?
-
btw, you can do different leg positions for the leg farthest from the pole.

I prefer to do this one with a 1/2 spin first, then move into the back hook. It was easier than just doing the pivot for me. Also, it will give you more momentum than just pivoting into it as well.
If my R hand is on the pole, I will swing my left leg around to try and touch my right toe (on opposite side of pole.) Once the left foot touches floor, begin the pivot, throwing the right leg to the side, and behind. Only after the pole comes in contact with left knee pit, can you bend Right leg, throw your hips forward, and head back into that open hook position. I don't know if that will help at all, but try to wait for the pole to hit your knee, and not lift knee onto pole early on.
Once you get good at it, you can lift yourself up onto pole for longer spin, but I don't recommend that starting out 🙂

Make sure you are pushing your hips forward and keeping your toes pointed. That may help you some. 🙂

I finally got it!! I made it around the pole several times! Thank you Lord! XD Great feeling.
