regaining confidence, fighting the cold, and finding motivation
When I started poling, I had so much momentum, everyday was full of new tricks and I was on the pole at least 2 hours a day. Even when I was lazy, I knew that once I got on the pole, I would find the motivation. so motivation was easy to come by, all I needed was a tiny nudge to get on the pole for 1 minute, and that 1 minute would turn into 100.
Well, that bubble burst at the end of my 5th month, when one day I woke up with a shoulder and a hip pain, just from wear and tear on the joints, “overuse” was the technical diagnosis I got. So I couldn’t practice for almost 2 months.
Now I’m all better, but have lost so much strength it’s really depressing to practice. Whereas before, I was discovering a new trick every session, now each time I get on the pole, I discover one more trick I lost.
I know if I practice I’ll get my strength back, but it’s cold and dry in the winter (my first winter in beijing! and i’ve only heard bad things about it!), and I have to do a lot of warm up to get my skin a little sticky, and have to pre-heat the pole with a heat lamp, which, compounded with the intimidation of not being able to do old tricks, just makes it extra hard to get up and do it. It’ll be easier in the summer, but I can’t wait that long!Have you ever been in a pole rut? how did you get out of it?
