how to avoid ‘leprechaun legs’ in cartwheel mount?

Haha, I know what you are talking about but I don’t know how to fix it. Have you tried doing one straight leg and one bent, until up? It’s easier to me to tell one leg to point than both legs to point both feet. Im still pretty shoddy at cartwheel mount, so Im pretty sure I don’t really have any authority to say anything useful 🙂

I laughed so hard when I read “leprechaun legs” because I had to stop and think of what that was, and the image in my head was hilarious. what a perfect description…. haha! 🙂

I would say to concentrate on the leading leg first. Keep it straight and keep it pointed, don’t worry about the second leg until you’ve got the hang of the leading leg being straight and pointed. Try starting small again, don’t try to go straight into the cartwheel mount otherwise old habits will come back and your legs will come in again. Do small swings, keeping that leg straight. And increase to the cartwheel mount when you are used to the feeling of having a straight leading leg.

THANK YOU! Helpful tips for sure. Glad I’m not the only one with this problem. I tell you–I did not even realize I had this habit. I never do the move in my freestyles because I don’t feel like I can flow into it well (which is want I want to remedy) and I never do it in heels (again, remedy). So recently I did a freestyle and threw that in after the song ended, because I had heels on and wanted to try it in heels, so I got it on video. I will find it and get a screenshot. You will get a good laugh. 😉

I think things like this tend to work themselves out once you’re aware of them. So from here on out you’ll be hyper-aware of pointing your toes, and your toes will point. That’s the way it is for me when it comes to new(ish) moves, anyway. I think they’re all cool, and then I see a video and think :-/
But then I concentrate on whatever problem area got exposed and that helps. It’s why I love to record myself, even though sometimes I hate to watch my training sessions!
PS – Those are BAD-A$$ shoes.

That’s a fantastic name for it!!! haha Everyone has great tips. I don’t have much to add, just keep at it. I will said that doing a cartwheel, (head goes forward and down) is usually easier to master straight legs then the handspring, (head back and down)!

just updating to say…I have improved this a TON. Need to be conscious of it or I will revert back, but being aware of it I can keep both legs straight. Hurray!!

Veena is right, doing the mount that direction, which I call handspring mount (even though it is more like a back walkover) is considerable more difficult for most people than is a cartwheel mount. Also, shoes are heavy and tend make it more difficult. I am sure being mindful of keeping your legs straight will make a considerable difference. I like to think that I am leaping with straight legs and the pole just takes me upside down. The fun thing with the handspring is that you can go all the way over ;-).
