Hi! I’m new to pole dance and when I do a very simple pole hold, my wrists hurt in my effort to be kept on to the pole. Perhaps because I slip.. So is not so much that I don’t have the force, but that I slip.. Is it normal?

Hi Abby, I responded to your email about this 🙂 Others may also have some suggestions for you. As always a photo or video is helpful when trying to help someone trouble shoot.

my wrists would hurt after doing pole holds when I was a beginner. this was because I was overgripping the pole. my wrists were wrapping around the pole not held in a neutral position. when I realized what I was doing I corrected it and it went away. I wore wrist wraps for a couple of weeks to help me keep that neutral position and while I was conditioning and strengthening my wrists. I don’t need the wraps anymore and my wrists are better. a video would be a good idea. something like overgripping is really easy to spot on video.

Be very careful and be sure to have proper technique when doing certain moves. I hurt my wrists early due to improper instruction from studio. It was actually veena’s instructions and advice of the people on this site that taught me proper technique. It took months to heal before I could do split grips again.
