  • I can’t get into it!

    I have lived at my new apartment for about 6 months now. I put my pole up back in August and have used it once or twice. I see all these cool videos and think to myself how I would love to improve or get into better shape but I can’t seem to get into the mindset anymore. Has this happened to anyone else? I should also probably mention that I paid for a year of Veena’s lessons a couple months ago and haven’t used them. I want to want to pole but I just don’t. I’ve had my pole for almost 4 years and am not where I should be skill wise.

    Trust me you’re not alone in feeling that way! I’m sure others will have some helpful advice too! The first thing I want to mention though, is to avoid the mindset of after 4 years of poling you should be at a certain “level”. This kind of thought process can really get in a person down and lead to feelings of frustration and failure. That’s not what pole is about! There is no rule that says after 4 years everyone who enjoys pole should be doing Shoulder Mounts.

    Poling at home isn’t always easy for some, but here are a few things you can try:

    Pick out a list of your favorite music and freestyle, it doesn’t matter what it looks like just enjoy your own movement.

    Try the 30 day take off program, even if you don’t “do” everything listed, at least watch and read the descriptions for each day, they have a lot of great info and tips in them.

    Try using the routines or combos in the lessons, there’s a new section with all routines, strength, abs pole work all under that category too.

    Try meeting up with another member here in the Chat room. You can video chat and work on things together. Setting a time to meet can keep you accountable.

    Also take some time to think about why you want to pole? Find reasons to pole for YOU, not because you want to look like so and so when you dance. We all have our own strengths so write yours down and try working on them.

    I’m in an “off” period right now. I was on my pole almost every day but slowly went into burnout. Now i pole once a week or so. Just not feeling it. The grey stormy weather doesn’t help my mindset. Point is, most of the people here have had an off phase. It’s okay. Sometimes if i don’t feel like dancing or working on tricks I’ll just use my pole for a workout. Side crunches, pull ups, leg lifts, as a stabilizer for ab work, etc.

    I’ve been poling on and off for almost 6 years. With the cyclical nature and a ton of weight gain I’ve gone from level 1 to level 2-3, back to 1-3, into 4, back to 1, etc. It’s a viscous cycle, but it’s how my body works. I pole when I can, and it is not nearly as often as other girls can, but oh well.

    I started poling about two years ago, on and off and well it’s been an off period for a very long time. And the mindset Veena mentioned, I have fallen into that trap and it’s been a real bitch to get out of. I am in it right now. I have poled a little bit more as of late, and have SV lessons. Plus have a friend teaching lessons. All I can say is, take it one day at a time. 🙂 Good luck and good pole journey 🙂

    Thank you for all of tha advice everybody. I think the first thing I need to change is definitely my downer attitude and hopefully the rest will come. I did use the lessons a little after my first post but only for conditioning. I think you’re right Veena. I Just need to turn on some good music and see what happens

    At the end of the month pole will be at The Arnold. There is a HUGE jam taking place at Infinity Aerial. There is nothing that I know that is more motivating than being around a ton of people who all love to pole! Infinity is also hosting a few workshops that weekend. You really should take advantage of this opportunity!

    I actually used to take classes with Val from infinity and I like it a lot. That’s another thing to think about. If work permits I will definitely be going to the Arnold.

    I was in an off period of any kind of working out and pole for a few months. It’s hard to get back in a rhythm when you get out of the habit. but a few weeks ago I signed up again and watched the conditioning routines. They are only 20 min and I made a deal with myself that if I tried doing one of Veena’s workout for 15 min and still wasn’t feeling it, I could say screw it and stop doing the workout. Usually by the time 15 min went by I would either be feeling better or just tell myself to suck it Up, it’s only 15 extra minutes. Surprisingly I have seen a lot more improvements then I’d have thought by just doing 3 or 4 20 min routines a week. That has given me the motivation to do more.

    Yes I was the same for a while winter seems to be the worst. It’s seems it’s never the right time to train!! But after getting my self some vitamin D I feel a whole lot better. Maybe check out some health food shops for some healthy energy shots you can take before training they help too. Even set an hour aside a week half for pole training and half for stretching it might ease you back in. 🙂

    I am the same way. I didn’t use my lessons until after I had had them for 6 months! I just couldn’t get motivated and when I was motivated from videos and such working on myself made me discouraged almost immediately. What I have learned is that if I put on music and get changed I have a much better chance of following through with it. I am lucky because my room mate knows how important it is to me and he will start music and make me get up if I am slacking. I also set really small goals now and strive to do more than I planned. I used to set huge daily goals that were impossible to accomplished. I cannot tell you how much that discouraged me from working on stuff because I always felt I had failed no matter how much I did. It truly is all in the mindset. It is hard to change to a positive mind set but totally doable with a little consistency.
