Split grip vs Twisted Grip

Twisted grip looks so uncomfortable and although I’m a LONG time off trying TG stuff I put my hand in the position anyway just to see and it feels wrong https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif Can you do TG moves with just a normal split grip ?

Yes, a lot of moves that are done with TG can be done with a regular split grip. The TG felt really odd and uncomfortable for me at first too but I got used to it quickly and now prefer it over alot of other grips!

Also, TG is a lot harder on the joints than SG (split grip), especially in case of the handspring. So be careful! It is usually recommended to learn the moves in SG first. Almost all can be done in either grip, the difference is more in transitions from other moves. You could eg. go into TG from CAR or reverse aysha. But tricks like butterfly, straight edge, straight edge split (aysha), jacknife, rubber aysha, can be done in both SG and TG. Lunchbox is an exception (prob. very awkward in SG if possible at all, mm maybe that’s worth a shot https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_scratch.gif ). Iron X and lift can theoretically be done both ways, but in practice will feel loads more secure in TG. SG iron X would require very strong and solid grip with the top hand, and will use different muscles overall. For a lot of people TG holds feel more stable than the same holds in SG, but that might be because you have the awkwardness of figuring out balance, hand placement and overall body positioning when first learning these holds in SG, so if you progress to TG from there it’s not really a fair comparison to make.

just reposting what i just wrote in another thread–
just adding a slightly different perspective, sorry if this is lecturing… i will only TG from an aerial move and not from the ground, because i find that it torques my top shoulder too much for me to be comfortable with the long term effects of the move. i don’t teach it except from an inside leg hang or CAR. there are very prominent polers that have permanent cartilage damage in their shoulders and wrists from doing the TG handspring and the respect grip SM. so… that’s a long winded way of saying: be very careful with the TG and NEVER kick into it with momentum! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_confused.gif

…just to chime in please make sure that if you are going to attempt this grip that you have sufficient shoulder flexibility/mobility to begin with. I have very inflexible shoulders and while I have the strength to do this move I by no means have the flexibility – I avoid it like the plague lol..
This is the move I see most injuries with in class and shoulder issues take a good deal of time to heal.

i notice that Joraya Judd also Lift in SG.
i tried it a couple of times, the Lift and Iron-X, and it feels a lot harder and more unstable than the TG.

Thanks guys! Very interesting! I must say in photos the TG hold looks very very nice, I am envious but I'll get there one day! (one year, lol)
