I am a power poler, all about tricks and cool moves. BAM! Handspring! BAM! Iron X! BAM! Ho handed sailboat! BAM! Janeiro! You get the idea… Pole is a sport for me, not a dance. I don’t hear the music, don’t hear the beat, I forget what I was supposed on the floor and I look terrible on stage. I tried, I got a fitness and strength award 😀 But I still want a routine! I am often asked to perform, but I don’t have a routine 🙁 I tried working with a choreographer, and she’s great, I just can’t execute it well enough – my timing is off, I look rushed and lost on stage.
Please, give me some advice! How to build a non-dancy routine? any examples?

please (please please) don’t tell me to just listen to the music and rehearse – I did. For a few months straight I listened, practiced almost every day, recorded, practiced some more and spent hours trying to identify strong beats and tempo in any given song. Nope, did not work. Not now and not in the past… I hear the big things in the music where a great move should come, but not the beat in between. I can’t even count evenly. Any other power polers out there? 🙂

I’m nowhere near a power poler… However I am a person with very little rhythm… Would finding a song with lyrics help? Just kind of know which moves happen during certain verses/words?!?

That’s what I did, but i missed everything in between words 😀
I’m actually skimming through my playlist right now. Any suggestion for a “go! go! go!” song?

Haha, the only “Go, go, go” type of song that came to mind was Wolfmother’s “Woman” song. Very very intense and fast-paced!

I’m not really sure about Go! Go! Go! but for whatever reason (probably because I just saw them in concert a week or two ago) Arcade Fire stands out to me a having bunch of songs with very strong beats and a lot of really distinct parts.

What about focusing on putting spins in between your tricks to add some flow to your routine. Or even switching to spinning pole if you are on static?

I would also recommend Rhiannan Nichole’s sexy flow lessons – It takes a bit of time and persistance though, before you would start to see an improvement if you’re not so into dance. Or if you are like me and into dance but are as stiff as a board and equally as uncoordinated.

I would suggest watching every single Pantera video that you can on YouTube. I would also suggest attending some burlesque classes to give you a sense of stage presence.

Maybe music like drum and bass. Ummm ‘Chase & Status – Pieces’ that off the top of my head – Thats goes brill with the ‘bam bam’ tricks so to speak 🙂

I like the Prodigy for power pole types of routines. Smack My Bitch Up and Firestarter are two fast paced songs that don’t need “choreography” per say. You could string tricks together and not worry too much about timing.

People like Smamantha star, Zoraya Judd are both power polers who dont do much dance. I dont either, but I work on it a lot and do a lot of no pole allowed freestyles. If you are performing for students, etc then it doesnt matter as much, but the public likes stage presence. Not dance ability, but the ability to draw them in with eye contact, etc. And yes it does take practice. Not months, but years. If you keep working, some day it will come! I have been working on mine for 2 years, and its not there yet but much better than it was.

As for music, gladiator type music or theme songs from certain moves/games work really well. Or ninja.
