Hi everyone! I wondered if anyone has any advice for turning to a clean eating diet? I have browsed old topics about diet and there is so much info in there! At this moment in my life I feel I am fed up of putting processed crap into my body and I am sorry to say I am a vegetarian who struggles to be inventive at meal times and ends up with a quick fix I know isn’t really good for me. Since starting poling in jan this year I feel more motivated than ever to look after myself and really need help with making changes, meal ideas etc. thanks in advance xx

We really have tried to shift our house into a predominately clean household. I eat a lot of beans (bean burritos with homemade tortillas, yum)and I’m huge on veggies! I find that I can graze all day on uncooked vegetables (sugar snap peas, carrots, broccoli) and not be hungry when I go to bed and my waist size and weight stay lower than what they have been. I take a protein powder in the morning to really get me going. Do you eat eggs and drink milk? As women and polers calcium is so important to us. I was a vegetarian for many years, but after sustaining a knee injury and not healing from it I started eating it again.

Thanks for your reply. I do still eat eggs and milk yes. I need ideas for meals I don’t think I’ve ever had a burrito lol and am bit of fussy eater which doesn’t help. I couldn’t bring myself to eat kidney beans or mushrooms for example cos they feel funny! Lol. I just feel really ready now to fuel my body well and of course my little ones x

    Hello Beautiful!

Kudos to you for working towards a healthy lifestyle! You are not alone in the clean diet endeavor, I too am a vegetarian– and a vegan on my best days! A cooking class I took 2 years ago was the turning point in my life, and the instructor now has a website ( http://yestolifesolution.com ) filled with great nutritional information, testimonials and great classes that are easy to follow. Also, videos on Netflix like ‘Hungry for Change’ and ‘Forks Over Knives,’ and books like ‘Eat to Live’ and ‘Vegan with a Vengeance’ keep me focused in the right direction when I feel like the world is against me.
The struggle to make healthy choices is so present in a busy lifestyle, but keeping fruit and other healthy ‘fast-foods’ handy is a must. You gotta give yourself healthy options to choose from, right? Also, I have an ever-expanding collection of recipe books, apps on my iPad, and print outs from the internet so I don’t have to be too creative if I just want to follow a good recipe and enjoy eating.
Lastly, calcium is obtained through so many more sources beyond dairy. Did you know that almond-milk, tofu, broccoli, sunflower seeds, dried figs, and kale all contain calcium? Surprise! And yes, there even more sources, in foods you may already be eating regularly.

    🙂

I have been trying to eat cleaner, too. I worked as a barista and baker at coffee shops for the last five years, so I am pretty much addicted to sugar and caffeine. But, I quit that job and got another one and have been cutting down on sugar a ton. I eat pretty healthy; I eat mainly local food (I live in Alaska, so all the meat you can possibly want is obtainable- especially if you have a partner that hunts!!), so I eat a lot of vegetables, whole grains, and super lean wild meats and fish. I found a great website, http://www.damyhealth.com, that has great recipes for free. I was looking mainly for healthier dessert recipes, as that is my weakness. I have tried a bunch of desserts and food from her and they are fabulous. The best thing is I can find all the ingredients here in AK which is hard sometimes unless you go to the city. I recommend the pecan pie bites, the quinoa breakfast muffins, and all her raw do over candy bar recipes. Also, if you are on instagram, unprocessyourfood, is an AMAZING account!! She posts some of the most yummy and easy recipes!! My biggest downfall with trying to eat healthier was trying to do it all at once. If I were to do it over again, I would have started off with just trying to drink more water; eat at least one veggie per meal; and have backup fruit and veggies as snacks ready. I’ve been on this HUGE pizza kick lately, so to balance that, I have been doing 45 minutes of core power yoga five times a week. Another thing I ran into was not allowing myself to have something just because it “isn’t healthy.”. I will have pizza, I will get a chocolate almond milk mocha, I will share that vegan brownie with a friend, and I go out for drinks and consume homemade wine at home every once in a while. You have got to treat yourself. Most things in moderation are totally ok (I have to repeat this to myself a lot!!). Oh, and one last thing, I have been making these granola bars from the minimalist baker to have on hand as a snack, dessert, or even breakfast on the go. I do toast the oats and the nuts together and I have done this recipe with just almonds, but recently I tried a combo of almonds and pecans and, oh man, it is so yummy!! I recommend trying these bad boys out http://minimalistbaker.com/healthy-5-ingredient-granola-bars/. I think this is a great discussion as I think we all should support each other in being more healthy!!
