Hi everyone!! This is my first post. I’m new to this site and pole dancing as well. I’m really happy to be here and have been lurking for quite a while. I love the amazing relationships built through this website and hope to gain a few of my own 🙂 With that being said, I am purchasing a pole for home and I am wondering what you guys think about the size. I Purchased a small pole extension to be able to really feel how the pole feels in my hand and against my skin. This is a 50mm pole piece. Do you guys think its the right size for me or should i go smaller?

I think most go for a 45mm now, in Australia most poles in the studios are 38mm.

I went for a 45mm as that’s what both studios use that I attend. Looking at your pic, my hands are slightly bigger than yours, and a 45mm is perfect for me. I think I’d find a 50mm a bit chunky.

I think it is really personal preference…it’s seems that 45 is the new standard; however, only newer studios in my area have them. Also I’ve been told it’s harder to go from 45 to 50 than vis-versa. I purchased a 45 to focus on spin moves and because my hands are very small but looks like you might have a good size for a 50. I’ve practiced on some 50s and I notice that while it’s more difficult at first for spins, I feel it builds my grip strength in the hands and it’s also great for body holds when you start inverting etc. I wish I could just have all the pole types at my disposal lol. Overall though…I’d go with whatever is universal in your area if you will also be going to studios or for instance if you work at a club makes sense to practice at home on what you will be using elsewhere.

I have very strong and large hands and my 50 is really too big for me. I am still struggling with one-handed spins. I would prefer a 45 or even smaller, but I bolted mine into concrete with anchors so I guess the 50 stays!

I am a very tall girl, with large hands (still working on the strong arms part) and I have a 50mm pole. I like it a lot. My hands look about the same as yours as far as wrapping around goes. I find it easy to grip the pole even just so. I think it’s all in preference really.

Tigerschic and Anzia had some good advice! If you’re goal is competing then I’d go with the 45 if you pole for fun go with whatever you like best. I think most women who are 5′ 7″ and under like smaller poles, (but not all) it can be a bit easier on the joints and much easier for one handed moves/spins and split grips. If you can use all sizes!

The studio i started at had 50s so that is what i got. I’m really comfortable on it. I’ve tried smaller but i get hand cramps. To each their own. I know several people have two or more poles in different sizes and finishes. I’ve got an xpole TG and am planning on getting a SV pole soon 😉

Not sure if it’s in my head or not, but I feel like poles that are slightly smaller are easier on my wrists and finger joints as I can grip it better (I have small hands.) It looks like the 50 would be manageable for you, but you would probably be fine, maybe even prefer a 45. My rule of thumb is a slight overlap in middle finger and thumb is ideal, within reason, cuz too much overlap can make gripping more difficult (for larger hands.)

I want to start off by saying thank you to everyone who has taken the time to give me some advice. THANK YOU!!! 🙂 It really means a lot to me, because there isn’t a studio close by where i can try different poles. I’m 5’11, so I was thinking that a smaller pole might be uncomfortable. I have read that people choosing too big a pole has been hard on their hands and people with to much of a small pole have difficulty as well. Measured with palms facing upward, there is 8 inches between my wrist and the tip of my middle finger. Lastly, The picture that I took before was a relaxed grip. In this new picture is my tight grip. LOL!

Milla Grey – have you ever tried a smaller pole?
Studio Veena – As far as competing, I never thought about doing it, but I would never discount the idea.

I am completely new to pole to (well apart from a few studio classes),I just had my first pole delivered last week. I went for the 45mm in the end. I tried the 50mm in class and it felt a bit too chunky…the only good thing was that it seemed easier to climb. The 40mm just seemed too small and I have short stubby fingers! I think it’s best to try all of them and see what you are comfiest on before deciding which to buy.

Good luck with it though… it soon becomes addictive lol

I tend to bounce between 50mm and 45. My studio has 1 lonely 50mm brass, a 50mm chrome and the rest are 45mm chrome. I use all of them on different days (people who show up late tend to get stuck with the 50s) and for me it really just depends on what I’m doing. I’ve been showing the 50mm brass a lot of love lately just because I stick to it better than chrome and I feel like the 50mm keeps my grip strength strong, but I always make sure to try new tricks on the 45mm as well to see the differences (some moves pinch me a lot more or on chrome than on a 50mm and/or brass — yay, experiments).
