Hi guys, I am having problems with the ballerina spin. I go into the reversed grab fine but I just cant seem to hook my leg. My leg straightens instead of hooking and I just come to a stand still. Any help will be well and truly appreciated. Thankyou

I am having the same problem with this move! i can’t figure out how to get my leg there in time, just feels like an impossible angle?? i’m not sure if it’s just flexibility or if there is some knack to it… i can get into the shape from standing but doing it from a spin seems impossible…. interested to read everyone’s tips on this too =)

You need to have a bit of shoulder flexibility to execute this properly. I just don’t have it and have written this move off. I can do a reverse grab but cannot twist my arm enough to get my opposite hip next to the pole.

Have you tried doing this on spinning pole. I cant do it on static pole yet, but can do it on the spinning pole. with the spinning pole I am able to focus more on body positioning and don’t have to worry about maintaining my momentum at the same time.

it is much easier on spinning pole and may help you when you try it again later on static

Have you guys done the flexibility test I have you do in the lesson to see if you’re ready? It could very well be a matter of flexibility. If it’s not lack of flexy, then often it’s a matter of timing.

do you mean you can’t hook your front leg? assuming you pass the flexibility test, maybe start with working on the pretzel spin

i’ve not done the ballerina, but this has got the same leg hooking situation in the front without having to worry about the back leg. what helped me with the pretzel was emphasizing straightening the legs before hooking. on static mode it is very tricky timing, so i agree with lilredrobin that trying it on spinning pole first is very helpful. its one of the spins that breaking it down into articulated steps can be very helpful especially cuz it happens so fast.

this is vid from my page of the pretzel spin on spinning pole. you can see that little bit of hang time when my legs are in a straight straddle before i hook the front. it made such a difference

it’s not the same spin, but hopefully this helps somewhat! good luck!

The pretzel and ballerina are the same spin, at least when referring to the lessons here 🙂 https://www.studioveena.com/lessons/view/4fc631e5-4354-4c33-8b45-7bf40ac37250

Thanks for all your tips. Going to have another go today and try the flexibility test. I smashed the screen on my mobile phone the other day grrrrr, so when I have this mended will video my very poor attempt of the ballerina and post it up 🙂
