I see so many beautiful and exciting freestyle vids here so wanted to ask for your tips.
Do you start recording with moves in mind? Do you write the combos down?
Do you run it through several times first or just dance it? Do you imagine an audience? Do you mentally or properly choreograph it, do you get inspired by other dancers here/on youtube/at the studio if you attend one?
And what are your top tips for making a freestyle feel and look amazing (apart from POINT TOES).
Apologies if this has been done to death already but would love to know your insights…
    Thank you beautiful dancers πŸ™‚

I have the same issue as Runemist in that my freestyles end up mostly being pretty grounded. I made little flash cards and have been drawing a couple at time and those will be the 3 moves or so that I’ll make happen at some point in the dance.

Other than that I just try to feel the flow and stop thinking as much as possible, and it’s been slowly getting better. I used to only make it 20 seconds or so before getting distracted and stopping and then it would be hard to get back on track. Now I can get through a minute, sometimes two! So just doing it often and filming has helped a lot. Now the incorporating more tricks is a big focus…one thing at a time I guess! πŸ™‚

I wonder if few people respond to this simply because we are all our own worst critics on our freestyles..

Some polers will lock down short combos that work really well so then they can flow them into the dance but still have some structure/muscle memory. This seems especially common with spinny pole work.

Finding your freestyle is a journey for sure and I don’t know if I’m the best person to give advice on it. I hope some more people respond cuz this is such an interesting topic

This video is about creating a routine, but by practicing the tips given you’ll start to understand how to put it to use for freestyle work too! I know when I freestyle I’ll gravitate towards using moves I’ve been working recently. The best thing you can do is practice doing freestyles!! 😊 https://www.studioveena.com/videos/view/52a09793-a94c-4545-9789-78b10a9aa0eb

Thanks guys! Veena I love that vid.
    Found another thread https://www.studioveena.com/forums/view/5015e2d7-7b44-4c5d-a1d1-2ebc0ac37250
It is hard to search for freestyle tips as the search brings up masses of videos of people free styling before anything else in discussion…

I can relate to feeling grounded when you try and freestyle. My freestyles look very repetitive… And include a lot of dip spins and pirouettes. :/

I replied to both those threads, hah. Still agree with what i wrote in the second link, that music is KEY and i have a couple moves in mind that i want to incorporate. And sometimes it clicks, sometimes it doesnt. πŸ™‚
