  • Slow loading lesson videos?

Posted by ferrous on July 23, 2014 at 7:11 am

In the past few days, the lesson videos have been loading really slowly for me; slow enough that they stop for more than a minute while they load in the background.

Has anyone else been having this issue?

I know it’s not my connection, as no other videos have been loading slowly like this.

If the lessons have worked fine for you in the past but not recently it is generally indicative of a failure with your ISP or less commonly a problem with your computer. We use Amazon’s infrastructure to deliver our content which provides a very consistent experience.

My partner, using the same devices, hasn’t encountered a problem with slow video from elsewhere (and at around the same time as I’ve been having issues), which is why I wondered if perhaps there was an issue at a different end than ours.

If nobody else is having problems, I guess it must be _somewhere_ between Amazon in the USA and our ISP in Australia. Makes troubleshooting a tad tricky. LOL! ๐Ÿ˜€

Anyway, thanks for the reply. ๐Ÿ™‚

Generally when people say elsewhere they are referring to Youtube hosted videos. Youtube has a multi-billion dollar edge network. Which means that there is a good chance you are playing youtube videos from a mirror only a couple miles away from you and probably on your ISPs network, leaving very little potential for any problems.

Other edge networks, such as Amazon’s, only provide a few mirrors per continent. In Australia we only have two, which means that there are many ISP dependent issues that can occur.

We do our best to use technology partners that can help eliminate these issues but without budgets like Google can afford we can’t completely eliminate issues like this.

The upside is that if it happened out of nowhere it generally disappears out of nowhere when your ISP finds their issue or after enough complaints.

*nods* All very valid points you make.

Especially the ‘out of nowhere’ comment; I’ve had only one StudioVeena video do it again since my initial forum message, and it happened in the middle of several other StudioVeena videos that played perfectly. So รขโ‚ฌยฆ yeah. LOL!!

Thanks again, especially for all the detail in your reply. ๐Ÿ™‚
